99 Pontiac Montana sometimes starts then dies
Our 99 pontiac montana has started to, on occasion, start and then immediately die. We turn the key off, and then restart it and it is completely fine. It doesn't do this all of the time. Most of the time it starts and runs great. Once it is started and stays started, we don't have any problems with it. Also, within the past couple of weeks, a few times, the battery has been completely dead when we go to start it, and has to be jumped. However, every time this happens,we find out that one of the kids have left a light on or a door was shut all the way or something like that. So...I'm thinking this might be two seperate issues. I think we need a new battery since it dies every time a door doesn't get shut all the way, but I don't know what the other issue is. Neither me or my husband know anything about cars, and we don't want to take it to a shop until we know what is wrong with it. Has anyone else had any problems like this or might know what this could be?

Re: 99 Pontiac Montana sometimes starts then dies
Welcome to AF!!
One of the first things I have to ask is whether or not you have done routine maintenance on the vehicle? How old is the air filter, plugs, fuel filter and etc. All of these can contribute to your issue. As for the battery it may be on its way out but leaving the door open overnight is enough to drain a battery completely. I suggest you put the battery on a charger and bring it back to full charge. An alternator will maintain a battery but a charger works best in trying to bring it back to life. |

Re: 99 Pontiac Montana sometimes starts then dies
We just bought the van in January, so we don't really know how it was maintained before us. Since we bought it, we have only had one oil change done. We are more than willing to have any filters changed or do whatever we need to do, but just want to know what needs to be done.

What is the mileage now? Mileage when you bought it?
Has the vehicle been scanned for codes? |

Re: 99 Pontiac Montana sometimes starts then dies
The mileage when we bought it was 145,000 and now it is 151,000. It hasn't been scanned for codes. I am not exactly sure what that means. Does that mean checking the codes for the check engine light? If so....we haven't done that because the check engine light has never been on.

Re: 99 Pontiac Montana sometimes starts then dies
Scanning the codes whether the check engine light is on or not will tell you if there are any stored codes in the computer. Also, I suggest that at a minimum you have the fuel filter changed and put new plugs in the engine. Bad plugs or a partially blocked fuel filter can cause the issues you indicated. Since you just purchased the van you probably don't have all the service records. I would also change the air filter, the pcv valve, have the throttle body cleaned and you may even want to consider new plug wires. Finally, a good fuel system cleaning would not hurt but it is not an absolute. A good quality bottle of fuel system cleaner in the tank can't hurt though.

Re: 99 Pontiac Montana sometimes starts then dies
This sounds like leaky injectors to me. You have to put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see how quickly the pressure drops to zero after you turn the key off. If it drops to zero in less then 10 minutes, it's not good.
