i have recently installed a new pump .(97 merc villager Ls) upon inspecting the new pump i noticed it had a valve or something in the Copper tube where the dampner connects too. i proceeded to install it thinking it was ok there. i then reassembled it back into the tank and put the tank back up. i then primed the pump about 3 times. the van did not start. all hoses are back where they were . upon inspecting the old pump i did not see this valve looking thing. did i do something wrong?

Re: fuelpump replacement?
I believe that is the fuel dampner. Luckily I have not had to replace the fuel pump to date/
I assume you can hear the pump run for 5 seconds then turn off. What was the reason for fuel pump replacement. Did it die or just loose pressure??? I also assume new pickup screen was installed. |

Re: fuelpump replacement?
yes i hear the pump. yes new screen filter is on it. the reason was that the old one died. fuel dampner? the fuel dampner isnt my problem. the problem is that where the dampner hooks onto the copper tube for the pump. there is a valve type looking thing in the copper tubing. was i supposed to take that out.? the other pump never had one in it?

Have you tried starting fluid in the air cleaner to see if that makes a difference?? You may also want to check fuel pressure, I have seen new pumps be defective also. Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator for any gas in the vacuum line or smell?? You have spark correct/// |

I would think if the piece you are speaking of needs to be removed there would be a paper with the instructions stating to remove. Yes it sucks to have to remove tank twice, i have done it because of a bad new pump on a caravan. |

Re: fuelpump replacement?
i'll reread the paper that came with it and see. if not then i'll check the line at the rail and see if any fuel is comming through or not. if then i see none i'll drop the tank yet again. thanks for the help thus far. will keep you posted on my findings

Re: fuelpump replacement?
well when i went out and reread the paper it says nothing about the piece i mentioned. so i am assuming it should be there. after priming the pump several thousand times i tried to start it. it gave a few chugs as if she wanted to start. but then no go. the pump is working, the ignition is right, just waiting for the battery to charge again, i was smelling gas so i am assuming its getting there. i'll try again in a few hours. maybe flooded now.? will report back later on

If you think its flooded hold the accelerator pedal to the floor this stops the injectors from squirting fuel into clyinder. Can you explain what happened when the original pump died. Were you driving or just would not start, that sort of thing. How was it diiagnosed that the fuel pump was bad??? I realize you said that you have spark, is it blue in color or orange. Wheredid you test for spark?? |

Re: fuelpump replacement?
it died right at the gas pump of all places to die. lol. the pump wouldnt work at all. i had checked what i knew of these systems. im an ole school type. older vehicles that is. still didnt kick in . now for the rest of what i have done tonight. i just need to get a piece of hose joiner to finish it. but she is getting the fuel properly now. i switched the hoses in the front instead of removing the tank this time. will post more tommorrow when i get it all put back together. many thanks soo far.
