Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Hi all,
Recently acquired the Hobby Design Ken Block conversion for the Aoshima Impreza. Have just started to cut plastic and gather reference photos. One thing I can't seem to find any decent pictures is the rear sunshade (where the top of the rear window attaches to the roof). The kit wing is way too big. I'm sure I can modify, but require a decent photo. Here is what I am trying to show: Kit instructions wing: ![]() You can just make it out here on the actual car. The carbon fibre piece. ![]() Is this an option you can buy for the actual Impreza or is it a custom piece? Now to continue. Thanks Tony |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
If you look at older reference pics of Dave Mirra's X-Games car (similar to Ken Block's) you can see the roof spoiler is similar. Also, refer to an older '08 WRC prototype and it appears to be the same type. I'm assuming this is probably one of several things that come in a standard package when the car builders purchase the car (race-prepped version mind you).

Somebody with GT5 (I'm not near my PS3 at the minute) could photograph this area of the Impreza WRC for you

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
A friend of me is building this car.. with the HD transkit and what i can say is that you will have a lot of work if you have in mind to build exactly the same car.. rear and front bumper is totally different and HD transkit do not provide all these pieces..
Honestly if you just want to have fun, forget about the minor details, apply all the pieces that come with the transkit, i think you can have a nice result, not loyal to the real car, but a nice model..

More links with large reference pics:
http://www.funtener.org/autos-motos-...o-t244644.html - Scroll down towards the middle and then to the lower section. There are nice large side and overhead profile shots of the rear spoiler that can help you get a better understanding of the shape of it. http://www.modified.com/features/mod.../photo_01.html - Large shot of the rear spoiler and some other pics from the Gymkhana set. http://www.dailycarsnews.com/news/ar...ideo-7359.html - More large pics while driving and stationary. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6UvcnCThYn...en+block+6.jpg - Fairly decent 3/4 rear shot. |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Thanks everyone for the help thus far. Really appreciate it.
Crisjr, I know that the transkit, combined with the Aoshima kit will not make a 100% replica. I'm not in for a lot of work on this one! Especially the interior, but I do plan to make a custom rool cage for it. Luckily the back windows are dark tinted. I didn't think the front and rear bumpers were that way off. On the front, the annoying thing are the fog lamps in th aoshima grill. Too hard to remove them. Painted black though they will not stand out. As for the HD kit, there are some problems in it. The major one is the front hood decal. It should be white where the Subaru signage is, the decal continues the yellow from the sides. Not hard to fix but I have to make a new decal for the Subaru signage (or cut it out very carefully. Another is the resin wheels. They are too wide for the tyres. So some trimming needed. It should be an interesting build. Maybe I should do a report in the WIP section? Thanks again everyone. Tony |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Hi Fizzy,
I know what you mean.. that's exactly what i said.. have fun.. finish the car on the best way possible.. cause it's far from the 1:1 .. and you'll get a very nice model.. First thing about the decals, my friend did some tests before applying the decals ![]() ![]() As you can see.. it looks like.. something is wrong.. well, what i suggested to him was to cut the decal, making 3 decals, two for the sides and one for the front, that one with the Subaru logo. You said that the one for the front, where Subaru logo is, should be white, but it looks like white to me.. isn't? I agreed with you regarding to the front bumper, let the fog lights where it is, too hard to modify that bumper. I bought a Varis Transkit from Jet Model, so some original parts will be useless, if you need something to replace, just let me know ok. And for sure post you progress at WIP, let us follow you building progress Regards |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Interesting. This is what my sheet looks like.
![]() Does your mate have set HD03-0151? Also, if he hasn't used it yet, would it be possible for him to scan that decal in question please? It would help in making a mask. Thanks Tony |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
WTF??.. the decal is totally wrong!!.. it doesn't even looks like the box art!!.. LOL . .shame on you HD ..
Unfortunately he had cut the decals as you can see bellow: ![]() Not sure but now that you shown me your decals, i think that the decal used from by my friend is that one from ebay.. don't know the name of the seller but i've bought a couple of sheets for some friends.. perhaps i can try to find his name on my ebay's history if you want to. Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
No worries Cris. I think I can work it out.
Another Question. I notice on one of the DC Gymkhana vids, that the hood and roof are carbon fibre. The close up on the vid you can clearly see it. Although in photos on the web, you wouldn't know. Just wondering if it is worth using some Carbon decal? Would it look silly with the rest of the scheme being gloss black? Look forward to some guidance. Thanks Tony |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Hi Fizzy,
I found some photos on the web.. but this one called my attention, just because it was taken by someone "normal", it's not a photo studio, as you can see on the photo the roof is clear coated.. it's shining, so i think that you should apply CF on roof and hood, then you can apply some clear coat to reach the same shiny look as in the car http://www.dodo-logic.ca/wp-content/...1/100_0894.jpg This is what i would do...

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Good photo. Really shows the difference in the carbon fibre roof and the black body. You can also see the clear film from the white "DC shoes" on the door!! That wouldn't pass a modelling contest lol!
Thanks mate. Tony |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Another question if I may, what would the color of the front grill be? Is it a silver or a gunmetal? It's the part that holds the Subaru badge as seen here:

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Fizzychops, I have the same transkit you are using...
I really dont know why this shit happens (I mean, Hobby Design, W-H-Y do you insist in make aftermarket with such freak mistakes? WTF????? And it is not cheap at all... by the way.... Well, Fizzychops, with this HD03-0151 transkit, is possible to make 3 versions of this car. One version uses a little rear sunshade (very close to the window) and another 2 versios uses a bigger one (with the only difference related on the decal option) If you are planning to make the car that uses the little one (this is what I will do), you will not need the decals numbers 34, 35 and 41. BINGO!!!! You can use the decal 35 to make a correct Subaru signage on white colored background... Only you have to do is get the new cut right and mixes both 9 & 35 decals as well!!!! Check your decal sheets and you will see! |

Re: Ken Block STI Subaru Impreza
Hey Drago,
I came to the same conclusion a few days ago in relation to the Subaru decal that is not needed for the smaller wing. But that is just slightly larger than what it should be. No one will notice though! Yes, trying to get the cut right for the hood is going to be tricky. Was trying to work it out last night. Do I paint the black first and then mask for white or vice versa? Hmmm. |
