My trucks going CRAZY

2000 Silverado,1500 4X4 with 5.3 litre

The ABS light is ALWAYS on, and has been on for the past year or so. I decided to send it into the shop and have it check.

The shop told me I needed front bearings. They said the bad bearings were causing the ABS Light, and the ABS not to work.

I told the shop to go ahead and replace the bearings. Total cost 1900.00

Took the truck out of the shop, driving down the road, and the ABS light came on, went back to the shop, and they checked it out and said I needed a ABS valve (I think thats what they called it). They said it sits under the truck on the drivers side and says it's a very difficult job.

I asked how much, and they quoted me 2600.00

HAHAHAHAHAHA needless to say I didn't get it done, now I have no ABS, AND NOW my friggin brake light flashes intermitily.

Sooooo I took it to the dealer, they checked it said I needed the ABS valve thingy, but have no idea as to why the brake light is flashing. They said all the brakes are fine, brake lines are good, there are no leaks, master cylinder and booster is ok.

They said it would be STRAIGHT time to find the problem, as they feel it is a electrical problem. They said it could take anywhere from 1 hour to 20 hours to find the problem.

Can ANYONE help me with this, at 89.95 per hour labour rate, the 2600.00 to fix the valve, I'm affraid I have to take a second mortgage out on my house to fix this truck.

I don't really care if the ABS works, I just want the brake light to stop flashing, as it drives me NUT when driving at night. Anyway to take out the light bulb.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading.

See it's driving me nuts, look at the spelling mistakes. LOL

Re: My trucks going CRAZY

don't you call around before getting any work done to your vehicle ? you got robbed. 1900.00 is way to high.

so the abs light is out ? the red brake light is on ? the vehicle brakes correctly ?

next step is to get the abs codes pulled and post here .............

Actually no I do not call around, I have been using the same shop for the past 10 years or so. As my user name suggests, I use my trucks for snow plowing. I have such a good relationship with the owner of the shop, I have his home phone number. There has been a number of times that I have called him in the middle of the night because one of my trucks were broke down, and he has alway come in to fix me up.

I actually though the price was pretty good, considering that the front bearing were 500.00 per side plus 2 hours labour per side, shop supplies and taxes, grand total 1873.94 But then again, maybe I did get screwed.

ok
the ABS light is always on
the red brake light flashes every now and then
the brakes work normally, except for the fact the ABS does not work ever, and I have never been able to "lock up" any of the wheels if I jump on the brake pedal.
the emergency brake and cables are all good as well

I will get the ABS codes read and post tomorrow.

Thanks for your help j cat.

the labor time is ok.for 4hrs labor it was 800.oo. that is high. he screwed you on the hub costs. the hubs can be had at auto zone for 180.00ea. these are timken USA bearings with the calibrated sensor. 3 year warrantee. these are the same OEM made hubs.

check the fuses. with the ABS fuse blown or removed you will get the amber ABS lt and the red brake lt......

get the codes if you find the fuses are all good.

yes this will cause the brakes to work if the fuse is blown or removed.

who made the hubs they installed ? dealership parts ?

Re: My trucks going CRAZY

if the hubs are defective/ not hooked up you will get this light issue.

the hubs need be tested before install this is easy just a voltmeter and rotation of the hub by hand. you must get over 350 MV or .35 volts ac.

A new hub will put out .5-.6 volts AC.

a constant no output from hub will cause both lights to come on.

On hubs ,chinese crap is being sold as made in USA timken hubs. do not use these products.

I can purchase chinese hubs for 65.oo ea. great deal only problem is they don't work very long.

Re: My trucks going CRAZY

I had one hub put on my 2002 chevy at my dealer and he used oem parts and charged me 500.00 tax labor and parts. For a dealer I thought that was good.

Fiserman
the timken oem hubs list for about 360.oo ea. 2hrs labor is 160...

so the cost should be about 520.oo for this job ea.

500.oo at dealership was a good deal.

the owner of the repair shop must really love this guy .

he must have been a used car saleman .

it will be interesting how this high priced repair shop screwed up this job.
