catalytic converter issues

I have a 2000 buick century and need the catalytic converter replaced. How hard is it to do yourself? Also ive heard their is a bulletin about the buick regal converters going bad and gm extending the warranty, is their any information about something like this with the century.

Re: catalytic converter issues

GM did extend the warranty to 120K miles if you are beyond that you will need to replace it yourself. As for a new one you can purchase a direct fit convertor from most auto parts stores or online. If you have the tools and some basic automotive knowledge you can replace it yourself. The hardest part is removing the old parts especially the nuts that hold the convertor to the manifold. If you decide to do this yourself get a can of PB Blaster and soak the nuts liberally and let them sit. Do it several times.

The direct fit convertors are the easiest as they do not require welding. If you use a universal one you will need to weld it in place. A much harder job. Good Luck!

The car only has 91,000 miles on it. Do you know where to get the warranty information so I can bring it to the dealer and show them?

The best thing to do is to check with a GM Dealer to see if your model was covered by the extended warranty. I know it covered the Regal and Grand Prix but it may have been later model years and the Century may not have been included. Even if you need to replace the converter it shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred dollars.

While you are under on mileage, I believe you are over on time....call your local dealership, or maybe our local GM rep on the board can give you the specific mileage/year interval.....
