1/20 Tamiya Newman Porsche 956

Hi guys,

Because i can't get any paint done in this cold weather i started a project, that need some serious modifications and scratch building. I want to make the 1984 Newman Porsche 956 that drove the 1000km of the Nürburgring. I bought the kit including the decal set from a member here, but came to the conclusion that the kit model didn't look like the real car. I asked a friend what the difference was and he told me if i want to do this correct, i need to do some cutting. He told me that the only thing that is useful form the Newman kit is the cockpit and chassis. All other parts are from the 962C(nose and tail). So i started with my first conversion and this is where i am now. I cut the nose from the 956 and replaced it with nose and tail from the 962C. I'm pretty happy how it turned out, but i need to do some serious filling and sanding, before i can paint the body. As you may already know, the front light of the 962C are molded in the plastic and need to be replaced with some of a 962C from Revell. Since i don't have that kit, i already contacted the parts department from revell for the clear parts. If not, maybe somebody here can help me out(if needed). Another problem is the chassis. It's much larger than the short tail version and need to be resized to fit the body. I haven't figured it out how i'm going to do it, but if any of you know, please do share. Here is where i'm at now:

Best regards,
Lesley

nice to see a newman porsche 956 being done as it appeared in the 1984 'ring. as someone who's doing the same car but as it showed up le mans (though i hate the fact that the rear rims are wrong), i'm definitely watching how this build turns up

I have the correct rear rims in resin. They where made by Stradasports and given to me as a gift from a friend, because they are out of production. I will make an update soon.

What you'll have to do is cut the front of the 2 chassis pans and then put the front of the 962 pan on the rear section of the 956 pan.The cut on the pan sides should be at a line that matches the forward edge of the door.

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Newman Porsche 956

Hi guys,

Here is another update. I've been very busy with this project and i needs a lot of dry fitting. Because i used the nose of the 962C i had to replace the front of the floor by a piece of the front from the 962C donor kit for a correct fit. I also changed the rear of the floor by cutting of the end of the diffuser and replaced it with one from the 962C. I know it's not a 100% correct, but i need to make a high downforce tail from a low high downforce tail. I also been filling the gaps between the 956 cockpit and 962C nose with epoxy putty and have been sanding like crazy. I'm not there yet, but i'm waiting for some tools to get a better result. Here are some pics and i hope you enjoy them:

a small dry fit:

This is a great car and you are off to a good start. Unfortunately you are using the wrong rear tail. The Senna car is a 956 'B'. The tail you need is the short tail from the PROTAR 956 kit.
Try to find photo's of the 956'B' and you will find a more gentle curve over the rear tire. The 962 rear has a more dramatic curve to acommadate the larger 19 inch wheels.
The 956B ran 16 or 17 inch rear wheels. Also look at the Bellof 956'B' at SPA 1985 for better photo's of the rear tail. A few years ago i produced a large decal sheet for the Bellof 956B and this is where the research began. Good luck!

Lesley, Great work so far, efficient modifications and kit combination
was also wondering about the scale, but I suppose it's a formula deformation and it's 1/24 not 1/20, is it ?

just to make sure. It's 1/24th scale. I made a small typo.

Lesley

Re: 1/20 Tamiya Newman Porsche 956

Hi guys,

After some serious searching and some help from a friend(thanks Rob T.), i found a photo of the 956C diffuser to my disappointment. So i had to start all over again with the diffuser. After some thinking and some sleepless nights i found the solution. I had to cut the diffuser and build it up again with some plastic card. The cutting was not that difficult, because if you use good materials it's saves you half the time. So i got surgical with my thin blade saws from Crazy Modeler and made the cut. After cutting all the parts and sand them a bit straight i started with the rebuild of the diffuser. I used plastic card from 1mm, because the plastic from the kit has the same thickness and add some thin plastic card to reinforce the inside of the diffuser, so i can putty and sand like crazy. Anyway here are some pics and i hope you like them:

Next job is puttying and sanding like crazy. Until next time.

Best regards,
Lesley
