Re: Fabricating Turbos

I already tried to make my own turbos, unfortunately haven't taken pics...
I think the simplest way is to roll up electrical wires around a small plastic rod, that's what I did and it's not to bad. The key is the size and scale question, mines were a bit over scale using too big plastic rods and wire sections, as I didn't test or compare anything before trying...
Not it can help but...

Tomorrow, Im going to throw up some pics of what Im trying to do. Scale is whats messing me up currently too. Im trying to fab up not only the turbos, but the top mount manifolds as well, in addition to this being my first time ever scratch building. Anyway, Ill show you guys what Im working with, maybe it will help.

Re: Fabricating Turbos

There was a guy who used to be on the scale auto forums with the name of freakintiger who could scratch like crazy. I dont see his posts on the SA Forums, it looks like they cleaned up some historical posts maybe. Look for him out the on the web and you might find some great inspiration.

I made some for my TT Cobra build, but I dont have WIP pics. I got all my info on how to from Freakintiger.

The basic concept is heat some styrene rod, wrap it around another rod and stretch it while you are wrapping it.... (not very helpful I know)

Look for freakintiger and you will find some insight.
I hope this helps you out!
Andy

Re: Fabricating Turbos

I'm working on a similar thing myself, but mines in 1:12 scale.
But as the others said, its pretty basic. The manifold will be the hardest, I suggest using soldering wire for the manfold & thin the ends where they all meet

Re: Fabricating Turbos

There should be a tutorial here in the FAQ/tutorial section, or spc.org.uk

Re: Fabricating Turbos

I've made some semi convincing turbo's using solder. It comes in a variety of diameters, then wrap it around some aluminum tubing and set it with super glue. flanges can be made from bits of styrene card.

As for the 1/12th scale turbo, I'm working on a master for my 1/12th scale builds.
