third door won't open

Hi,
97 extended cab -three door
The third door for rear access just clicked and something inside snapped loose.
Now it won't release and open.
Where do I start to get into the latching mechanism?
will the upholstery come off while closed?
Do I drill the two rivets at the handle to get into it and open it?
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Re: third door won't open

If it's anything like the S-10 one than the latch maybe broken inside (made from plastic). I don't think you can take the panel off when the door is closed so my guess is that you are going to have to drill the rivets to get the handle apart. My dad's 98 S-10 went thru like 8 handles.

Yes That is my guess.
Yours is the only answer so far and it makes sense.
I have already replaced the drivers door inside handle which is plastic also.
Thank you.

Re: third door won't open

Hi,
Update!
Yesterday I drilled the two rivets and got the handle loose.
The pullrods were still both connected, but when I pulled the bottom rod with pliers nothing happened and when I pulled the top rod it opened.
I now have the pouch thing out and see the bottom latch is not clicking.
Feels like a broken spring in the latch.
Today I'll remove the panel and then the bottom latch to see what is wrong.

Rock auto doesn't have prices on the website and GMpartsdirect cart doesn't work it gives a website error so I can't check shipping cost, but the price is $94 and online price is $56 I might go to pick and pull in a day or so.
They have one or two 97-98 extra cabs there.
At least I won't have to drill the rivets on one that opens.

Re: third door won't open

OK all fixed with a replacement bottom latch.
The GMC dealer wanted $90, The Chevy dealer wanted $110.
I got it for $20 at U pullit.
Rock Auto said $56 and list for $94
No plastic in there at all, All steel.
All done!
