98 Glass run problem

98 Windstar, 3.0 engine, 218K.

Has anyone had the probblem with the rubber boot on the driver door glass run latch side retainer moving out of place. The rubbber keeps on sliding down the retainer, I have thought of using super glue to keep in place. THe other problem is that the top of the retainer seems to have pressure pushing it towards the inner part of the door causing the window motor to work harder than it should.
What happens is when the boot slides down the retainer the window moves our of the retainer and slides down the outer side of the rail, not in the track (other than salvage yard). I have also liberally sprayed the rubber boot with lithium silicone spray. I have seen them for sale on ebay but not of late, any ideas where to get one. The Ford online site does not show it.

thanks

Re: 98 Glass run problem

Are you talking about the slides that are at the front and rear of the glass? that the glass rides in?
I think I have a picture or so about them.
Mine broke, and I bought the part at the local dealership....not real expensive and very easy to replace.
The slide parts just bolt in.

Thanks wiswind

Yes I am talking about the part the glass slides in at the back of the door (by the latch). The rail is not broken but the rubber keeps on sliding down and then the window pops out of the retainer (the rubber part needs to be a little higher than the top of the metal frame to kep it in place), then slides on the outside (outside door handle side) of the retainer and puts alot of strain on the window motor. According to my Ford Service Manual it only shows 1 bolt holding it in place. I found them online at tascaparts.com for $26.00 plus shipping, have not checked at local dealership yet.

What would be best adhesive to use to hold the rubber part on the metal rail??? I have not gotten to parts store to check into adhesives yet.

Re: 98 Glass run problem

I have no idea of what a good adhesive would be, that is a new problem.
I had a nasty rattle in 1 front door......turned out to be one of those slide rails laying in the bottom of the door.
A couple years later......one ended up in the bottom of the other front door.
Spot weld had broken......but replacing was easy.
You will need to remove the bolt....and take the rail out......glue the rubber back in......and put it back in.
The glass stayed in place for me, so it was more work taking the door panel off than it was to replace the rail.

I picked up a adhesive called Perma Oxy made by Permatex from Carquest today, It is a 2 part epoxy for $7.00. Suppose to bond dissimilliar materials. Let you know the results.

Re: 98 Glass run problem

Removed channel last night and used the epxoy to glue the rubber boot into channel and let cure overnight. Seemed to be attached very strongly, time will tell, ifrubbeerboot moves again I will need to replace channel. I will update if epoxy fails.
