Transverse gearbox
Hello All,
One of G.Murray's specifications was for the F1 to have a very short gap between the engine and the driveshafts. This has been achieved thanks to an innovative transverse gearbox. Does anyone know more about it? Any drawings, cutaways, pictures of it? I would love to know more about this gearbox! Thanks in advance. |

Re: Transverse gearbox
I am a big fan of the JayLenosGarage.com site and for some reason I've never seen that video. Great find and thank you for sharing!
![]() As a side note - and let me preface this by saying that Jay has forgotten more about cars then I could ever hope to know - there were two minor errors from him during that clip in relation to the Rocket. First he mentioned Suzuki as the supplier of the engine when it was actually a Yamaha. Then he said the car had 6 gears with two final drives for a total of 12 speeds when in fact the box only has 5 gears for a total of 10 forward speeds. The only reason I even mention it is because he so rarely gets anything wrong. >8^) ER |

Re: Transverse gearbox
That is a great video.
So now I have to contact Jay Leno to get a scan of this drawing because the resolution was just too low for me to fully get the thing. These guys are indeed clever. |

Re: Transverse gearbox
You'd likely have a better chance of getting a response from the folks at Weismann than you would trying to contact Leno.
They did mention in the video that a copy of this drawing is in "the book" which I assume could only mean "Driving Ambition". I've just checked and the only similar drawing I was able to locate was that of the Xtrac GTR gearbox which you can view here: ![]() The Limited/Owner's/Le Mans copies of DA include a full sized engineering drawing and the one I have with mine is of the 'Gearbox - Maincase' which is different. I just looked to see if I had any reference to another one showing the Gearbox internals and I don't see anything in my archive. Perhaps a couple of the other people reading along here who have the Limited versions of DA could report in on what drawing their copy included? When I have some time tomorrow I'll unbox my Limited copy and skim the pages of the 'Gearing Up' chapter in order to see if there is any additional content there that didn't make the cut for the retail copy. Perhaps that is the book the Weismann guys were referring to? >8^) ER |

Re: Transverse gearbox
Yes, that is perfect!
So now the question is: how come Xtrac was able to produce the racing version of the Weismann design? I believe there were patents for such design. Or did Weismann design the gearbox and outsourced the dimensioning/manufacturing to Xtrac |
