Amsoil -v- RoyalPurple -v- Mercon V

I know that the more worn an engine, the more important using a synthetic is. This is because they are capable of higher operating temperatures. This means the molecules are more stable and more difficult to break down.

So one would think a premium synthetic ATF would be better than Mercon V that everyone and their brother sells.

Any opinions?

Thanks
Tom

I used Mobil 1 ATF and then switched to Redline D4 in my '96 Windstar.
The synthetic will take more heat without breaking down (critical in a ATF).
They synthetic will flow better when cold.

I have not used the brands that you mention, but have read good things about them.
Just make SURE that they are listed for use in the Mercon V application.

It would be interesting to measure the operating temperature drop associated with these various synthetics. If they are doing their job, there should be a temp drop.
