Cool Maserati Boomerang (Airfix, 1/24)

Since my childhood I admired the form of this concept car created by the talented Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1971.

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/5...Boomerang.html
http://www.cardesign.ru/articles/his...10/05/27/3964/
http://www.cardesign.ru/gallery/cars...ati_boomerang/

On a scale of 1 / 24 plastic kits were manufactured by Airfix and Heller. In fact it was the same moulding in different packages.

And then, in December 2011, I succeeded to buy it for 56.47USD including delivery. Now I have an opportunity to build a model of this amazing car.

And of course, as I suspected, kit suffers embarrassing inaccuracies. First, too widely separated roof rails. To begin, I cut the entire roof with pillars.

Then cut out of it excess and glued.

Second, the wrong seats, which will be altered. To begin, I cut them out from the bath of interior.

Third, the body is shorter than necessary to 12mm!

The first extension is on the door.

love all your projects, but am kind of wondering why you´re even bothering with all these inacurrate kits if you can or do 3d print most of it new in the end anyway

Re: Maserati Boomerang (Airfix, 1/24)

I always like quirky and interesting subjects like this, and I'm looking forward to how the model will turn out. However...
>>Third, the body is shorter than necessary to 12mm!

That's because you used the overall length as a reference, despite the fact that the photo doesn't represent the actual shape of the body.

Photography involves this thing called lens distortion, and the area close to the center almost always appears larger in the picture, and the wider the lens becomes, the bigger the distortion gets. A telephoto lens can minimize distortion but it's hardly ever used in studio photo of cars.

This means that the length of the side sill relative to the overall length is printed longer in your photo. If you print the same photo to match the length of the model's side sill, the overall length will be printed shorter, which will give you a different impression that the model is too long (which is also an incorrect conclusion).

I'm not saying that the shape of the model kit is accurate (because it's a really old and primitive kit), but when trying to correct a body shape, you have to use the actual measurements, and create your own reference drawings, and use photos only as a loose reference, or your model will end up with incorrect body dimensions.

Re: Maserati Boomerang (Airfix, 1/24)

hirofkd: Thank you for you opinion and advice. However, I use photos only as reference. Naturally, I use real dimensions in my works. The real Boomerang has the next dimensions:

Length / Width / Height 4342 mm (170.9 in) / 1860 mm (73.2 in) / 1070 mm (42.1 in) Wheelbase / Track (fr/r) 2600 mm (102.4 in) / 1475 mm (58.1 in) / 1445 mm (56.9 in)
As you can see the length is 4342mm. This means 181mm in 1/24 scale. The model is 169mm long. 181-169=12
The wheelbase is 2600mm, that is 108mm in 1/24 scale. The model has 101mm wheelbase. 108-101=7mm shorter than necessary!
Now back to 3D printing. It's a very hard way to create a new bodyshell, because at first it needs to do a 3D model. The second, there is a lot of work to finish surfaces after printing .The third, the print model is not stable and hard enough, and so on.

Re: Maserati Boomerang (Airfix, 1/24)

I see. That's the kind of explanation I like!
Looks like both the length and wheelbase are inaccurate by 7%, so the model may be close to 1/26 scale.
Anyway, good luck with your project.

Re: Maserati Boomerang (Airfix, 1/24)

BTW. There was increased the height of the sides.

Then I made a rear bumper narrower from top to bottom. There was considerably increased an inclination of the sides to the earth too.

Then . The shape should be the same as the paper template.

Cool Re: Maserati Boomerang (Airfix, 1/24)

Thanks guys!
I've decided to put this incredible body on a Maserati Bora platform, as it was in the real prototype. For this purpose will be used a rare Revell's kit.

I'm interested in this part of the kit.

And I have begun.

But I am confused by the small sizes of the engine and the gear box. Here for comparison the engine from Ford GT40 about the same displacement (on the right on the photo).

Moreover, the corner between cylinders should be 90 degrees, as in the Ford engine, but in Revell it's about 60 degrees.

The engine should look like this.

Also I have decided to make new rims.
This is what we have.

Rim should look like this.

My brother have created for me a CAD model.
