transmission flush procedure

Have '02 3.0L SES Taurus with AX4N transmission/transaxle with 128K miles. What is the best way to flush the system? I will be replacing the filter, also. Any suggestions on what to use to install a drain fitting in the pan? Is the pan gasket a reuseable gasket? Thank you for your time and consideration.

Is imprinted right on the OEM gasket that it is reusable. If you put a drain in the pan you still should take it off to get the pan and magnet clean.
I have drained, replaced the gasket, cleaned the pan and magnet on my '02 every 30K miles and at 110K it still shifts like it did when it was new. Never have "flushed" it.

If you want to flush the system remove the return transmiission line from the radiator and attach a long clear hose to the line, so you can watch for change in color of fluid and also put in a gallon jug to determine approx how much you have removed. Of course do this after you have removed pan and replaced new filter and added approx 4 quarts of fluid.

Then start engine and let it pump out some of the old fluid (best if someone is in the car while you watch fluid) shut off engine add same amount of fluid into tranny, repeat procedure until satisfied old fluid has been replaced. (This does get the fluid out of the convertor also)

I agree with tempfixit, except that I replace the pan and filter last, after the last "dump". Empty pan easier to handle.
