retaining steering wheel audio controls

I am looking into replacing the stock cd player with a bluetooth capable unit from Pioneer and wonder about the need for a bluetooth interface to retain the steering wheel controls.Does anyone know if this is really a must have because the one I looked at is $50 on top of the price of the stereo.

knowing what vehicle you have , then going to crutchfield to see if this is possible is where to start.

some vehicles this would be a problem to remove the OEM radio should it be part of the diagnostic system.
