Blower motor or Resistor?

I slashed in small floods in the rain just before hurricane Irene, and my blower motor went out and won't run on any settings on my 2000 grand pix gt, how would I know if it's the blower motor or the blower motor resistor?

Re: Blower motor or Resistor?

That much water? Could be one or both.....

First thing to do, is turn blower on, and then tap the motor housing with a hammer......if it starts, bad motor....

If that doesn't work, disconnect harness from the blower motor.....attach a test light to the harness......turn key to on....turn blower on through all speeds....if test light progressively gets brighter, need a motor.....

If it doesn't light at all, disconnect the harness to the resistor block and check for power there....if you have power, then bad resistor block....if no power, check fuse...if fuse ok, bad control head.....

Re: Blower motor or Resistor?

Welcome to the forum!

Before anything else, it would be good to know if you have either automatic or manual AC. There is a difference on the location of the resistor for both cars. If you have automatic AC the resistor is likely to be OK since it is mounted far from the blower motor.

Re: Blower motor or Resistor?

Any "W" cars with bad blower motors- I always look for the rubber water deflector to be "off" its mount - just above air inlet to blower motor. Water can run in and short out the blower resistor big time....remove passenger side cowl at base of windshield and examine if your water deflector is still mounted. The glue dries out and deflector falls off on about half of the ones I examine. I clean and re-glue to fix..

Re: Blower motor or Resistor?

Welcome to AF!!

Remove the blower motor and make sure that the motor is working by connecting it to at 12 volt source. Then test the connection to see if there is power coming from the resistor to the motor. It is possible that one or the other may be bad. If that doesn't work you may have to replace the ignition switch that sends power to the resistor. This usually doesn't fail but if no power is going to the resistor then the fan will not work.

Re: Blower motor or Resistor?

The resistor you purchased is either bad or had a bad connection or both. Usually when the resistor is not working correctly the fan will only work on 5.
