Is it necessary to remove battery before connecting something to the radio?

Well basically I'm installing this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIE-CHRY02-A...ht_2056wt_1270) to the back of my radio. All I have to do is connect one connector to an empty socket on the back of my radio. The instructions state "Disconnect the negative battery terminal" as one of the steps.

My battery is behind my right tire, I am 18 years old and don't have extensive car knowledge, thus I know very little about the battery or what the "negative battery terminal" is.

My question to you all is: is this really necessary?

I drive a 2006 Chrysler Sebring.
