tcc not engaging

I've read a lot in here on tcc's, and the more I read the less I know. Is the tcc internal in the torque converter? Do they go bad? My '96 Bonny has 130k on it, and the tcc doesn't engage. I've thoroughly tested the circuitry controling the tcc solenoid in accordance to my aftermarket manual, and the solenoid is being turned on. In the driveway I manually activate the circuit and can distinctly hear the solenoid click. Can it be just the solenoid is simply wore out, not relaying the voltage for the tcc?

This looks like a tranny r&r to replace that solenoid. Is that correct? If so, should I turn it over to the tranny shop and have them give it a complete overhaul? I'ld rather not do the expense of all that if the tranny will last another 60k or more by just replacing that solenoid. Do I have to be well versed in automatic transmissions to replace it myself or is that a job for superman?

Re: tcc not engaging

it's a 96 with the 3800. No codes are coming up, I recon because the circuits are working properly.

Re: tcc not engaging

The tcc is the torque converter clutch. The solenoid is the tcc lock up solenoid and it is on the valve body in the pan. To replace the tcc you will have to drop the tranny. You can do the solenoid your self but may take you a little while. Dirty or worn out fluid can cause this as well as level of fluid. Worn out check balls short in wire for the tcc solenoid or a worn torque converter clutch can also cause this.
