Smile Snorkle

:alien2: I was wondering if anyone knew of a company supplying snorkles for the Xterra?

I don't see a part number in your post...

There are 2 snorkled Xterras. Carlton has one, and there's another X out there with a slightly different one.

The company is ARB/Safari Snorkles. I contacted ARB regarding a snorkle for the X and was told it was not available at this time and they had no current plans to make it available. Carlton fitted a Nissan Navarra (sp) snorkle on his X, but had to do some fab work to fit it to his airbox. As far as the other guy with the snorkle, I have no clue what snorkle he used.

Airtec (TJM)

The other snorkel is an Airtec, distributed through TJM. (http://www.4wdwarehouse.com.au/snorkel.html#airtec) I believe that was also a Navara snorkel fitted to the X. I presonally like the looks of the ARB (Safari) Snorkel better. Once SLR finishes up their sealed hi-flow airbox, I'd like to fit a snorkel to it.

I would love a snorkle, I'm just not too keen on cutting a hold in my fender.

... or actually trying to waterproof all the wiring and electrical stuff to fully use the snorkel.

I don't believe that it would be possible to completely waterproof all components of the Xterra without a rather unlimited bank account. I think it would require replacing all electrical components with military-grade stuff made for dunking. I think it WOULD be possible to achieve a "close-enough" quality of waterproofing, though. Some of the ideas I have for waterproofing the electrical's are dielectric grease, RTV silicone goo, and large amounts of heat-shrink tubing & self-sealing tape. I'm sure a marine supply would have a lot of useful parts. Also, remember if at all possible, try to stay out of the murky stuff, it will do far more damage than "clean" water. The hole in the fender is not a big deal for me (as long as I cut it in the right place). I was thinking about cutting out an inside chunk of the fender (looking at the engine bay, LF, near the stock battery location) to fit a York air compressor in there. There's no tire under that area of the fender, but I may want to fabricate a new "spash-shield" to keep water and mud away from the engine.

Mr.T

I never plan on driving through water that is really deep. I'm more worried about the occasional burm or sharp drop off leading into a water hole that requires you to dunk the front end of the truck. I know there is a spot at shamokin like that where you go over a burm and into a water hole. If you stay to the right its not too bad but the water still comes up to your head lights and its easy to get water on the hood.

I'm just interested in protecting against hydrolock, I'm not looking to turn Goliath into a submarine.
