How hard is it to redo flooring in a shower? My shower is a marble-like material but I think the flooring is vinyl-covered. When I stepped in it the other day a spot by the drain felt pretty mushy and a nasty smell came out Guess I aggravated whatever is hiding under there. Alex wants to tackle the job, so my question is should we be prepared to spend a few hours or an entire weekend?

It depends if your shower stall is a standard size. If it is not standard, it might take more than a weekend. If it has been leaking for a while, you may have to replace some of the sub-floor. Can you get under the house to look at the drain area?

Under the house? No. The bathroom is considerably far from "edge" of the footprint of the house. It appears that the seal by the grill of the drain appears to have deteriorated and the water seeping under the flooring. The shower was installed in 1989 and I wasn't here when they did it so I didn't get to see how things got installed...I was just a freshman in high school LOL. I rented the house from my mom for the last few years then bought it 2 months ago. This problem looks like its been there awhile, but I just noticed it this week ...hopefully that's not a sign that all hell's gonna break loose now. I dunno what a "standard" shower size is. The house was built in '71. Most newer apts. and houses have way smaller showers than what I have.

Do you have a concrete slab floor, or do you have a crawl space under the floor?
