1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Trans problems
Hey everyone, just picked up this car yesterday. I was driving it home and noticed it was at 4k rpms around 65-70 mph. I slowed it down to a stop and let it sit there for a minute. It doesnt start to take off until I put more pressure then normal to the gas pedal and feels like it doesnt shift at all, almost like its stuck in 3rd or 4th gear through acceleration. The check engine light is on I havent had a chance to run it to Auto zone to get it checked. But any ideas as to what it could be. I know I can assume the trans might be shot, but I am looking for any other options as to another possible fix? Wish I could provide more helpful information but I am not as automotive inclined as I would like to be and Ive had the car for a day driving it about 20 minutes on the way home.

Re: 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Trans problems
Welcome to AF!!
There may be a couple of issues here the most expensive of which would be a trans rebuild. It is possible that the torque convertor is shot and not transferring the proper torque to the transmission to allow it to shift properly. The first thing to do would be to check the fluid to see that it is at proper level. If it is correct take the car to a trans shop and have the trans scanned. They will be able to give you the most accurate diagnosis. |
