popping noise
hi guys, my cars been making this noise for the last 2 years , but it has gotten especially worse this summer. when im driving over a bump ill hear this noise that sounds like the battery bouncing up a few inches the dropping back down. (ive confirmed thats not the case) also sometimes when i go to make sharp turns, like in a parking lot, ill hear a popping noise. this noise is much worse and happens nearly every time i go in reverse while turning sharp, like when backing into a parking spot. and is even worse when i back into my parking spot in front of my apartment, which is at a downward angle (so im backing up and turning, up a hill) im guessing control arms but before i shell out $100 (they have gone down in price considerably at rockauto) i just wanted to get everyones opinions.
thanks in advance!

Re: popping noise
Depending on what the popping sounds like, maybe a bad CV joint, or lower control arm bushings. The other noise while going over bumps, I'd say that could be a bad tie rod, or ball joint.

Re: popping noise
definately sounds like a control arm issue or your intermediate steering shaft. did you check the round bushings? use a flash light and you should be able to see the hockey puck looking bushing. it should not rest against the frame or be seperated at any point.
btw GTX -look at my sig. it is a pre-production

Re: popping noise
I agree with the others that the noise you're hearing is the "hockey puck" lower control arm bushing.

Re: popping noise
Also check the sway bar link. i don't know if this car has one but it is a real common item and cheap to fix!
if the bold snapped or rusted off that would make the noise going over bumps and turning. |
