Need a cheap car that is also cheap to run

I am barely 19 years old and yet I was illegally fired and now sit with minimal unemployment benefits. I live in a small mountain town where I have had to cancel several job interviews because my current car does not run and I need a new one, fast. My old car barely got 18 MPG City/ 24 MPG Highway. Plus because it had a massive turbocharged 3000cc V6 it was very expensive for me to insure: $120 a month as a matter of fact.

I need a car that is not so massively expensive to ensure and not so harsh on gas. Also, it must be under $1000 and have minimum issues so that I am not constantly having to repair it.

Any Ideas?

Dude, one of the best cars that I have seen my customers and friends buy and drive forever, was the toyota echo. It looks a bit funny but is roomy, very good on gas and usually only needs brakes and tires for safety checks. But as usual, when you only have $1000 to work with, your options are limited. hope you find something that will satisfy your needs!

I really like your post, it's to the point needing transportation for job interviews on a low budget, unlike others with a low budget looking for a car going from 0 to 60 in five seconds.

I would like to give you some suggestions, but I note this post is about 5 weeks old - are you still saving or have found wheels ? give us an update
