Why are rice burners so popular

I have a 88 camaro and theres no car i would rather have than it. Me, timman and a friend just put a 355 with a high lift cam and 305 heads with a 700r4 transmission in it. I love my car and threres no car i would rather have, but why are rice burners so popular? All i can see is that there bad for the economy by taking jobs away from americans. Can you help me find this out?

I used to own an 88 Firebird, I loved that car...now I own a Neon...not import but compact. It boils down to opinion, my Neon is fun and just plain has different characteristics that an F-body. Also remember, just because the company is American, doesn't mean the cars are made by Americans. A good example is the Neon, Dodge is American, but some Neons were made in Mexico.

Buying a foreign brand car isn't as bad for the American economy as you might think. As is pointed out above, late model Camaros and Firebirds were built in Quebec, employing Canadians not US citizens.

Buying a Civic, in most cases, pays for quite a few folks from Ohio to build it. Engines are also sourced from Ohio. Many Corollas are built in California. Eclipses and Galants come from Illinois. Most Camrys come from Kentucky. Accords from Ohio. Mazda 6 and 626 from Michigan. The Subaru Legacy is built in Indiana. Etc...

Buying these foreign brand cars employ many Americans to build them. Many US-based parts companies supply the components to build them. Higher and higher content of these vehicles are sourced from North America.

In any case, by buying any car employs many Americans to get the car from the plant or port to your dealership...as well as the service and sales people at the dealership to sell it to you.

Money from all GM and Ford products goes to fund operations in divisions all around the world. And we all know that the CEO of DaimlerChrysler is in Germany.

The amount of money that actually goes back to a foreign country for most of their products is such a small percentage that you are actually funding the American economy. Of the money that goes to pay the executives of Toyota or Honda or Nissan, you'd rather that money pay an inflated salary of a GM or Ford exec? American execs are among the highest paid in the world...and much better compensated than Japanese officials.

Besides the flow of money, the competition provided by sales of imported cars in the US makes domestic brand cars better. There is not enough incentive to make products better without competition and not enough competition between Ford and GM to give the high quality variety of vehicles we have in the US. Our cars are cheap, reliable, fuel efficient, powerful, fun-to-drive, and come in so many sizes and styles all because of international competition.

And just to put your mind at ease, in 2002 over 80% of the cars and light trucks sold in the US were built in North America, and most of those were built in the US.
