2011 Austin Scale Model Show

It's that time of year again! Dust off this year's creations, buff out that last dab of cream polish and meet us at the Norris Conference Center for another scale model shoot-out on Saturday, September 24th (924, like the car).

In addition to the Best Automotive Award, this year we will also have a Best German Car Model Award for the first time. There are always tons of kits, detail accessories and tools for sale in the vendor areas. Rumor has it there will also be Russian acrobats, dancing bears, and a Thunderbirds fly-over at some time during the day but those are not yet confirmed.

Bring friends, bring models!
Mike

Awesome Alex! I think this is going to be a big car year for the show. I've been talking to car buds in San Antonio and Houston that have confirmed they're coming too.

Re: 2011 Austin Scale Model Show

Glad to hear it guys! This should be a really nice show this year. It will be our second year at the Norris Conference Center. It's the location that used to house the Northcross Mall. It's a nice place, much like a hotel ballroom kinda vibe but with better lighting for models.

There are usually a few second-hand Hiro/Studio kits floating around the vendor area at reasonable prices. Last year a couple of local car guys were liquidating a bunch of stuff: 1/12th Tamiya's, Fujimi EM's, HRM transkits, etc. Private sellers don't take credit cards so have a back-up just in case you stumble across something good.

ASMS had a recent quarterly contest at our June meeting and the only rule was that it had to be a car category. There were nearly 30 cars at that one club meeting and many were built to a high level. I was kinda shocked at how many people participated. Several of the entries were from club members that had never built a car before. What's better is that some of them are now working on another car! I think their hooked hehehe... I'm sure all the cars at the June meeting will be in the contest.

In addition to a couple of car entries I'll be adding two entries in the 1/72 aircraft for the first time in my life. I'm sure I'll get killed in that category but it'll still be fun to participate.

Mike

Just thought I'd post a last reminder of our Austin show this Saturday, September 24th at the Norris Conference Center (Northcross Mall). I look forward to meeting everyone and seeing your latest models.

Re: 2011 Austin Scale Model Show

So what was the turnout? Is this an IPMS show or a car club show?

I looked around for you during the show but I guess you weren't able to make it. There were quite a few cars this year. Of the 440 total models, I'd say nearly half were auto entries. We'll have all the winners up on the website very soon followed by pictures of each model entry in a few days. The overall quality of the car entries was exceptional. There were several MFH builds, a Pocher Alfa, a CMA Ferrari Barchetta, many conversions etc.. Two categories had to be split to accomodate the number of entries and extra tables were brought in to prevent crowding. The most popular categories this year were "competition - open wheel, competition - closed wheel, and light passenger trucks. There was also a strong showing in bikes, stock, and street machine.

My stuff did pretty well. The white Testa Rossa took best auto and I got a 1st in category for the Fokker F1 I did. My Honda CR110 got a third in motorcycles. Alex H. and Russell W. took a lot of awards. A fellow from California showed up with some impressive work and cleaned up too. He lives in San Antonio so I'm sure we'll see him at Fiesta 31 in February.

It was a great show overall. I think it's one of the best shows I've been to. Everyone I've talked to so far said something nice about it.

We were busy running the show but I had a chance to bs with several car buds from out of town and do a little model shopping. I bought a Top Queens 1/43rd Maserati 250F that I'm already working on! I even made time to look at all the models entered - something I've forgotten to do in the past because of one crisis after another. Things went really smooth this year.

Re: 2011 Austin Scale Model Show

Yeah, I had to miss the show. First time in a long time and it sounds like I missed the best one in years. Oh well, hope to see you here at the San Antonio show in February.

Your Testa Rossa is spectacular. It is no surprise that it would win top honors. And a Fokker F1 in 1/72? Man that's tiny!

It's nice to hear the show did well. Austin is a great place to have a show for the state of Texas as all of the other clubs are not too far away. I used to help with the car judging back in the 90's when IPMS Austin partnered with Austin Model Cars. The Austin club has a great bunch of guys.
