a/c problem

My room mate has a 1998 buick Park Ave. Last week he had to replace the starter. Everything went well except now hot air comes through the vent on the driver's side when running the a/c. All the other vents run cold. Any suggestions what the problem may be?

I assume you disconnected the negative battery cable before replacing the starter? Did you also you turn OFF the A/C control unit before disconnecting the battery?

Turn the ignition to the "ON' position for 3 minutes to recalibrate the A/C actuators for proper travel. If that doesn't work the driver side temp actuator mave be faulty or traveled out of range.

I assume that the AC control is on AUTO and key is ON for three minutes or longer.

Copied from service info (any setting should be ok, just don't change any settings during the 3 minutes, key off after before starting):
Important: After the actuator has been replaced, the actuator must be recalibrated for proper travel. The ignition must be cycled on for 3 minutes in order to allow the programmer and the actuators time to recalibrate for proper travel.
If the right panel vents are "cold" and the left are "hot", the left teperature actuator is out of calibration or failed. If the right is cold and the left is just less cold or warm, the A/C charge may be low. Remove the left sound insulator and watch the center of the actuator as you cycle the the driver's temp from 60 to 90. Auto setting will be fine because at 60 & 90 the system is out of Auto control and is full cold or full hot. After a few seconds the center should turn (there is a notch cut in the rotating part of the actuator that come close to lining up with 2 marks on the actuator body) from stop to stop. If it doesn't move give it a little tap, it may start working. If not, unplug it and remove it and turn the door by hand and verify that it moves freely and changes from hot to cold. The driver temp actuator is the left actuator in the illustration and the mode actuator is the other. The 1's are just pointing to the screws. Try the calibration first. You may need to disconnect the battery again to erase the programmer memory, reconnect it and then key on engine off for 3 minutes.
