stiff brakes

Hi all, need advice. Brakes on 98 z71 are stiff, stop and go traffic they become stiffer with every let off/apply. The engine revs up a little sometimes when I apply brakes, i have no idiot lights on dash, is this the booster? Other than this, the brakes are great, just feel like my 72 chevy with no power assist (great truck!) Anyway, thanks!!!

Re: stiff brakes

Sounds like a vacuum booster. Can you hear a hiss noise from in the truck when you are sitting still with the truck runnig and slowly apply the brake? That would be another sign of a bad booster. With the trck off, pump the brake pedal a few times to get the booser free from residual vacuum and hold it. While pressing on the brake, start the engine, If the booster is in good condition, the pedal will travel downward considerably.

hard brake pedal is usually the brake booster or any vacuum lines gromets fittings connecting the vacuum to the booster. since the idle increases when pedal is depressed I would say the booster is with a leaking diaphram..you may notice after this repair , the engine runs smoother..
