Car Trouble - GMC Jimmy '98

Hello,

I was on my way to work this morning and my car all of the sudden went from 55 to 35 and reduced drastically in speed. The service engine light came on. The car started jerking, but was still progressing forward. I pulled over and started the car back up. When I pressed down on the accelerator the car slowly jerk and met a speed of 35. It stayed at 35 for awhile then the car jerk and it started to speed up a little more.

I have never encountered this problem before and instead of spending my money to try and figure out what the problem is, I was wondering if you guys had any insight first.

Thanks!

Any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand autostores used to check codes for free. If the mil lite is on, there should be codes?

How long since a tune-up? Use a gage and check fuel pressure.

I know AutoZone still does code reading for free.

It sounds like what happened when my oxygen sensor (or CA emissions sensor?) went. The code will tell you more about it.
