Breaks Were Smoking

I just bought a 1991 dodge spirit with only 58,000kms on it. It sat for a couple of years but the person i bought it off did a weekly drive up and down the road. I put news tires on it and drove it home about 15km away and when i got home there was smoke coming from then passenger side front wheel and it smelt like the breaks. I dont really know much about cars. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Re: Breaks Were Smoking

Hmmm, not sure. Did you have the emergency brake on? I once had mine on slightly and didn't realize it for a while.

Re: Breaks Were Smoking

Sounds like you have a sticking caliper. Sitting so long, it may have rusted a bit and now it doesn't retract properly after you release the brake pedal (keeps pressure on the brake pads thus causing them to overheat and smoke.) It could either be rebuilt or replaced. It's probably easier to buy a rebuilt one from an auto parts store. Some parts stores are better than others, in my experience, so ask around.

It is not a difficult change, but since you're not familiar with car repairs I would recommend having a shop or someone with experience do it.

Good luck.
