Muffler Rattle?

Hi,

I have a 2011 Impala with 10,000 miles on it. Recently, something started rattling from the undercarriage when going over bumps. It is a high pitch rattle like a trailer when it goes over bumps. I have taken it to two chevy dealers and they said that the muffler was damaged, that it hit something and was pushed out of place. It was also missing a clamp which they reinstalled. They recommended a new muffler and said all other suspension components were fine (which I am doubting since one of them missed the missing clamp in the first place).

Question: Is there anything inside the muffler itself that could be causing the rattling?

Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Muffler Rattle?

The muffler will have baffles inside but ( since it's a 2011 model ) I doubt the muffler itself is the problem . Exhaust systems generally are connected to the vehicle utilizing rubber mounts ( to lessen the noise and vibration ) , likely you have a broken or missing rubber mount causing the exhaust system to move excessively and hitting the bottom of your floor pan .

these mufflers have internal baffles. if the muffler has a dent on the exterior this can cause these internal metal baffles to break off , and rattle..my concern is this can restrict the exhaust, also this will wear a hole in the muffler shroud..they should replace the muffler on warrantee, since a missing clamp caused the muffler to fall down...if you hit something and this all occured , then it would be best to go to a muffler shop and replace it..dealership will cost too much ! get stainless steel only.......
