Door Hinge Repair

I have an egged out door pin hole on my drivers side hinge and have relegated myself to welding the hole shut and then re-drilling instead of going through the hassle of replacing the whole hinge setup. My question is, does anyone know of a decent way of measuring to where I would drill the new hole without it being off-center and the door being all katywampus when its shut? Easier for me to re-drill cause I can do it in 5 minutes.

Re: Door Hinge Repair

The Dorman section in your local Auto parts store should have all the pins and bushings.
Try gluing the bushings in with liquid metal, or a replacement hinge from a slavage yard.

Re: Door Hinge Repair

Getting the pins and bushings is no problem. I would rather not use hinges from the junk yard because chances are they are allready egged out somewhat and I dont want to change the welded on hinges, too much of a hassle. I need to know an effective way to measure the center of the hole so I can redrill a new one. Welding is much more convenient for me.

Re: Door Hinge Repair

Make a temp;ate of what you have & a measurement to the center of the hole should get you close enough.

Re: Door Hinge Repair

The hole is egged out enough to not be able to get an accurate measurement. Now the right side seems to be ok so I guess I can get a measurement from there. I just realized I could do that

Re: Door Hinge Repair

If the hinges are welded on the body, you need to cut the door pins with a small disk grinder.
The hinges can be rebuilt while on the Auto.

Re: Door Hinge Repair

Most if not all hinges are welded on to the door and body. Replacing hinges in volves drilling out welds, cold chisel and hammer to then knock old hinges off. Remove trim from inside, cold chisel and hammer again to seperate body panels to be able to slip plate behind panels to attach hinge. Then bend panels back together, then spot weld panels back together, touch up paint and then hope you remembered to scribe mark old hinge before you removed it. See what I mean by pain in the a**.
