drum brakes grab/adjustment
I have a 98 Camry ,4cyl. and it is grabbing in the rear-i believe--only when wet---does fine when dry.It only happens at a quick brake at about 2 to 5 mph as i slow abruptly.Hsa new front rotors and pads and rear pads are like new, drum turned.also.Newer fluid-now from bleed,Also has ABS.
I did notice the adjuster wheels are not adjusted equally. It seems one is further out but both drums are equally firm on the turn.. Tried readjusting rear brake wheel, park brake, etc. What else might i try? |

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
What brand of brake shoes do you have? If they are not Toyota shoes, that may be part of the problem. Double check the brake adjustment.

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
I would adjust the brakes correctly and if that doesn't help, check the wheel cylinder for corrosion, then check the master cylinder then replace the shoes with Toyota.

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
I don't see how air in the MC can cause your symptoms. There may be a mechanical or hydralic defect in the system which keeps pressure on the rear brake cylinders. Air would prevent you from getting brake pressure.

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
Another possibility is that one of your drums are out of round. Have them measured or machined.

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
Is it possible that the new front pads and rotors may be a part of problem .or main problem..?

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
It is possible if the grabbing might be coming from the front. I assumed your problem was in the rear.

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
Make sure the sliding pins are greased. Check the rotor for warpage (runout).
Also, check to make sure your parking brake is correctly adjusted (rear).

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment..front
Hi
I looked at front and it looks like left caliper main seal has had it. Is that possibly why it was grabbing when wet? Will change it out, bleed system and see what that does. Other question is it normal when rear drums are turned properly to have top half etchy (from turn)and lower half smooth? Will this effect anything as long as it is evenly rounded? |

Re: drum brakes grab/adjustment
The inconsistent grinding means not enough material was removed and the drum is out of round. Have it redone. It is quite likely the source of your problem.
