Cool Revell Mercedes AMG SLS

This is Revell AG's Mercedes Benz AMG SLS. I built it for expanded review in the latest issue of Scale Auto.

It's an impressive kit, I enjoyed building it, and love how it looks finished. It's one of my favorite current 1:1 cars. The doors work fairly well, they even can be coaxed to stay open. Paint is Testors Honduras Maroon w/a tinted clearcoat. I spent time before painting coaxing the doors to fit properly; they were slightly warped but easily shaped to fit perfectly.

Re: Revell Mercedes AMG SLS

Nice work Bob! I thought about building two of these, one in AMG red like yours, the other in Alubeam (provided by Scale Finishes). I settled on Alubeam. Its a really nice kit...too bad Fujimi wasted it resources doing it too. Glad you noticed that the engine covers require carbon decals. The carbon actually extends even further to the windshield base.

Beautiful finish, I like it! What is this tinted clear? Is this a product out of the box, or you added a hint of red with clear?

Thanks; decanted Tamiya transparent red, just one quick coat (then clear). Because I wanted all panels to match, I had to do this w/the hood/doors in place. Therefore the door jambs and underhood areas that were body color didn't match. I then mixed thinned some clear red acrylic (Tamiya) and carefully brush painted those areas. You cannot tell they weren't sprayed and they matched perfectly.

Re: Revell Mercedes AMG SLS

Looks great!

I really like how when the doors are closed there is nothing that screams at you that the doors on this model can be opened, so well done.

How much brush-painting was involved in the chassis?

Thanks! That's a big problem I have w/any model w/opening doors, and was happy how well these fit after I manipulated the warp out of the pieces.

The chassis didn't require much if any brush painting; I added the toning on the exhaust freehand w/various Alclad colors through my airbrush.
