GMC Jimmy AWD

Hi, I´ve got a Jimmy with fulltime AWD from 1994 with 4,3l Vortec, 4L60E transmission.

The awd does´nt work, it does´nt matter if i have it in Hi or Low gear. There are no strange sounds and the Hi/Low works great but I have no AWD.

What can be the problem?

I´ve tried to search but did´nt find something helpful.

THANKS!

What transfer case do you have?
The ID is on back of it.
Is it a floor mounted shifter for 4W?
With 2W AND 4W AND 4W low

Are you sure it is full time AWD drive?
How are you checking for no AWD?

Re: GMC Jimmy AWD

I only have one button that says: "4 hi, 4 lo". No other buttons. I just checked and the transfercase is a NP 233 c. I checked the 4wd in a gravelslope and only the rear wheels would spin. The hi and low range works but no 4wd.

Re: GMC Jimmy AWD

I maneged to find the problem.

First you had to double tap the 4hi button to get 4wd, an then i found a vacuum leak. That was the major problem and with that fixed, that PROBLEM SOLVED

1: I have another problem too, I´ve got problems with the emissions. They are too high. All emission values is not stable, they go up for a while and then goes down. Bot not enough! I have changed rotor, distributor cab, sparkplugs and wires but that did´nt solve the problem. The car runs wery well now after the changes.

Where should I begin to try solve this?

2: My transmission is resently rebuilded whith new turbine and masterkit but the 3 and 4 gear has stopped working, I have heared that it might be some valve by the oilpan filter, what do you think?? Its a 4L60E.

Thanks!

You are welcome.

I think.
OK you have a SELECTIABLE 2-4 wheel drive.
With the crazy control button that you have to get out the opertors manual to find out how to shift it 2 to 4W.
All wheel drive is in 4w DRIVE ALL TIME.

Recheck emmisions and engine running after fixing the vacuumn leak.

On the transmission you need to get it on a trnsmission/engine capable scanner and check shifting and for transmission and engine codes.
Post back all code no.
Then clear codes and recheck for codes because the vacuumn leak could have set some old codes.

Re: GMC Jimmy AWD

I shall test the emissions om monday, I´ll get back with the results.

Ok, I´ll try to find a scanner for the engine. But I´ve heared that you can blink the trouble codes, how do I do that?

Re: GMC Jimmy AWD

I maneged to flash the following:

1 long, 2 short. flashed 2 times in a row. (12 System normal) then:
3 short, 4 short.

Shall I take that as 13, 14? (13 oxygen sensor circuit open, 14 coolant sensor high resistance or shorted)

I´m going to visit my GM dealer on monday.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LONG FLASHES FOR THE FIRST NO.
THEN SHORT FLASHES FOR THE 2ND. NO.
YOU HAVE TON WATCH RELMCLOSE FOR A LONG OR SHORT FLASH

LIKE 1 LONG = 10 FIRST PART OF NO.
2 LONG FLASHES PUTS IT UP TO 20

1 LONG AND 3 SHORTS - 13
2 LONG AND 4 SHORTS = 24

But first thing you have to clear codes and then run and drive and recheck

Re: GMC Jimmy AWD

I rechecket the codes and it was code 34 and 44.

34: map sensor signal out of range, low
44: oxygen sensor lean exhaust

I bought a new oxygen sensor and I´m going to replace it tomorrow. Were is the Map-sensor located on my engine?

Code do not say throw parts at it.
Map sensor.
With AT transmission facing engine right hand side of EGR valve.

I would work on map sensor problem first.
That coulld be throwing a 02 sensor code.

Make sure wiring and plug in is good.

let us know how it goes.

Re: GMC Jimmy AWD

I changed the oxygen sensor today and the emission problem is gone! . After the change I erased the troublecodes and took it for a drive, runs very well now

I can now say: THAT PROBLEM SOLVED!

Now it´s just the tranny left...

You need to gm dealer run your vin no or check RPO code or tag on rear end plate or just pull inspection plate and check ring gear for ratio.
