Question If there was one picture of the F1 you would love to have framed...

...which one would it be?

I received a gift recently that will allow me to have any image printed on gallery wrap canvas at 16" x 20". As you might guess - I have a tough job ahead of me trying to pick just one so I was hoping for some help from those here who share my passion for the F1.

What image would you pick? Think hard, choose wisely.

Re: If there was one picture of the F1 you would love to have framed...

The one of 071 in its orange disguise, with a black background, showing only part of the car. You know the one I mean Why? Because it's orange, and I'm Dutch . Because of the high-mirrors. Because of the simplicity of the picture. Because of how the lines come out more. Just because...

Or one of Doug's pics of LM03, where it is driving and there's the brown/orange autumn foliage. Why? Because it's an LM!

Or....

or...

Perhaps some inspiration could come from your awesome thread called somethign like 'My 100 favourites', where there was quite some interesting spin-off material.

I guess that if 56XPGT would be pushed out of it's storage tomorrow, and someone took some HR pics of it in the Woking countryside, and would share them with the world (and I would win the Lotto, while we're at it), that THAT would close this quest immediately.....Right? I might be wrong..... ???? :smoking:

I love these kind of threads.....let's see what comes up.

And just as a reminder (also to myself ;-) ):

You should make up for yourself what is your favourite chassis# and then take the best pic of that car

Re: If there was one picture of the F1 you would love to have framed...

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas so far gentleman - please keep them coming.

bucciali - I've flipped through the 'Top 125' already - there are a few contenders in there for sure. Looking through it reminded me that it is definitely time to add another 75 photos or so to that collection and spread them around again. All I need to do is figure out where I left my free time.

Patrick - your suggestion was also the first thing that crossed my mind and this one is leading in that category at the moment.

I also thought about this image below because it's a picture of XP1 the day it rolled out of the factory for the very first time, with Gordon Murray behind the wheel appearing to be overcome with emotion. I think it's a very special photo without a doubt, and certainly worthy of a canvas print.

The one thing I am slightly worried about with it is that the image isn't large enough to scale appropriately and the finished product might not look very good because of that. I have the image at twice that resolution from the original capture but the quality is not great at all.

Side note - if anyone is interested, Road&Track now have this image of LM3 from the Musee d'Art in Paris available to purchase in print form at up to 30" wide (76.2 cm for those who are metric-minded).

Find it here with the others they have on offer.

Re: If there was one picture of the F1 you would love to have framed...

The single best chassis to choose would have to be #01R, the Le Mans winner. There are all sorts of good images of that - still, racing, details, etc.
The next-best pedigree would be that of XP5, but unfortunately that car is too boring in that dark green, with silver wheels, grey interior.

I knew that, and I went straight to your pics of #069 to find that right one

There's alot of pics taken by AF.com F1 posters that are of a real decent quality, and this one stood out from them

Re: If there was one picture of the F1 you would love to have framed...

With Patrick's photo I'd have to get rid of the individual peeking out from behind the door frame via Photoshop for my purposes, but agree that is a wonderful shot.

I thought about #01R as well but I would want an on-track photo not a static display shot (it is a racing car first and foremost) and out of all the content I have from LeMans '95 there isn't one image that feels right and is of a high enough resolution to scale to the size I am getting.

There are the shots from the MTC gathering - maybe I should go for the one with the flat tire and see how many people notice?

Resolution is nice, but it's not everything. Also, if I understand the situation, this would be printed on a primed canvas surface, the texture of which would compromise the resolution anyhow. In an image of a speeding car, "perfect" resolution, which has not been possible until fairly recently, tends to kill the sense of speed. Don't get sucked into that "the-detail-has-got-to-be-perfect" trap.
These, for example, are nice shots:

Wrt static v moving, pretty much any road car image is going to be static, right? Yet road cars are meant to be driven, just as racing cars are. I don't see why one could be static, but not the other.

Re: If there was one picture of the F1 you would love to have framed...

The minimum resolution they will accept is 150 dpi - I assume that is by design as they know what works best and they don't want customers disappointed with the finished product. That makes for a 3000x2400 sized image if you want the print to be 20x16 which is effectively what I have been gifted. Actually it needs to be even larger if you want the image to stretch around the frame as most gallery wraps do, but I've decided I'll go with black along the sides instead. Taking your first image and scaling it up to meet those dimensions produces a pretty poor result unfortunately - one I think you would notice looking at the print.

Another problem - and I am not certain how strictly they enforce this - is the print house has a policy that says you must either own the copyright for the image or have permission from the copyright holder in order for them to process it. If I were to be confined to that restriction the number of photos I could consider would be quite small.

I am working on a solution now that takes into account your suggestion. Had I thought of using this image before I started the thread, I might have just waited to share the results. The main problem with this image is it will be rather obvious that I don't own the rights to it and I don't even know who to ask if I were to try and secure permission. Also there are some details that need tweaking before I submit it and I am working on those now to make sure I will be pleased. I do hear what you are saying about detail being lost with the texture of the canvas and am actually counting on that with this particular shot as I've had to increase it to 200% from its original size in order to meet the dpi minimum that I need.

Funny too about your second suggestion - I was giving this one quite a bit of consideration yesterday.

As for the moving -vs- parked thing - I just feel like an image of a racing car is best when it conveys a sense of speed. Take these two for example - they are fantastic:

That one is very nice. If you're worried about size, there is real good enlargement software and especially on a canvas the loss of detail won't be that noticeable.
If you're worried about the copyright thing, you can say I've got the copyright and you've got permission...
