R32 GT-R Idle/ Cutting out problem

Hey my R32 was running fine for the first few days after I got it, but now out of the blue it dies sometimes when starting it up. As you turn the key itll go to like 800 rpm then promptly die. Other times the car will start fine, albeit idle somewhat rough. I can drive around for a while and the car will die when i have the clutch in at a light or just coasting.

That sounds just like an air flow meter problem. Very common.

Yeah I went and wiggled the top MAF sensor while the car was running and it crapped out and died. I pulled the plug out and set it back in there, seems to work alright now. Hoping it was just a loose plug and not an actual bad sensor, guess ile be able to tell tomorrow when I drive to work.

Another problem Ive been seeing with the car is a creaking noise when i push on the brake pedal. The pedal also seems a little loose, i dont know how tight it is supposed to be though. I checked the brake fluid and its within the limits. Also i feel a little vibration through the pedal when im braking, as if the rotors are rough or something to that effect.

Re: R32 GT-R Idle/ Cutting out problem

I ran into this problem this morning. My car idled. got up to about 800rpm. then it just died. tried to start it a second third and forth time and it would not start at all. When this first happened I was pissed off because I had no clue what was wrong. but after reading the forums I am relieved that it is such a common problem so.... I took the MAF apart and there was some corosion on the PCB but it wasn't too bad. I rubbed it off with a q-tip that had some brut on it (only thing i could find with alcohol). that got all the corossion off of there. there was some that crossed the traces on the PCB so that bothered me a little bit. I resoldered the connection between the leads that come off of the circutry and connect to the inside of the external connector. The little thing (technical terms) in the middle of the rod that actually measures the air flow didn't seem to be damaged in any way so... I put it back together and pluged it back in.

No go.

I am sending it to the garage today though because the car is still under waranty. I do have plenty of pictures of my disection though so hopefully I can help someone out who has to go thru this for the first time. check my cardomain site for pictures they will be up in a day or two.

So what is the real remedy to this problem? I gather from these forums that these AFM's are real pains in the asses. I think I read somewhere that using 300ZX AFM's is a better solution. I don't know if the thinking behind this was for a replacement for a broken skyline part or just a performance mod. Do the 300ZX AFM's also have this problem? Does anyone know what the deal is with these things and what a good solution is? Another little question. On my R32 where the stock intake filter box used to be, it's a large flat area and water puddles there when it's raining. should I be concerned with this? I can imagine that it puddles there when the stock box filter is there (you just can't see the puddle) so..... has anyone thought of drilling a drain for this spot or anything like that? Any info on fixing any of these problems I seem to be having with this cubic foot of my car would be greatly appreciated.

The only real remedy to the naging AFM problem that plagues the Skyline is to switch to an SDS (Simple Digital Systems) reprogrammable engine management system or to get an add on or replacement ECU that uses a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) Sensor to figure out how much fuel the engine needs. A good example is if you get that GReddy eManage you can get a Pressure sensor and harness so that your AFM is no longer needed.

Re: R32 GT-R Idle/ Cutting out problem

My mechanic tells me that my fuel pump went. The car was running fine for about a month. I haven't added anything on to my car since I got it except I replaced the filter box with one of those green HKS power flow filters. This gives me a lot more air so would this have caused problems with my fuel pump?

I just got my car back today. it was the fuel pump. strange. but good to know about this AFM problem anyway. Those pictures are up on my cardomain site on page 4. check them out if you want.

cheers
