Thermostat & temp sensor

Hey, I'm no mechanic, but I lost my job & don't feel like going to a mechanic. My fans aren't coming on, and I changed out the relays. Gunna try thermostat and temp sensor next, but I can't get to them.

95 Lumina, 3.1 L
I know thermostat is supposed to be where upper radiator hose ends, but I cannot get to the damn bolts. I've tried every ratchet hookup, every angle for the wrench. I took the whole damn air cleaner off, and, short of messing with the throttle body, I just don't know how the hell to get to those bolts! There's a metal line just in the way of the ratchet being straight enough to get a grip on the bolt. I keep trying, but before I strip the bolt, thought I'd just make sure that's where the thermostat is. lol. Please help before I just drive the car into a wall.

Also, please, I want to make sure both motors aren't bad. I kinda understand how electricity works and kinda get that I'm supposed to hook red side of jumper cable to red battery cable, red side of jumper cable to what? Red side where the little clippy thingy with the red & black wires were going into the fan motor? People have explained it to me, but fast and with not much detail. I can't use the excuse that *I'm a girl* forever. I'm perfectly capable of doing this, just was never showed how. Please help.

First off, what's happening? Does it overheat? When?

I'd check for air in the cooling system before I did anything. A good air bubble in there will render the fan temp switch useless...

Holly, you need to respond to get some help. I agree that you may have an air bubble or blown fuse. It would help if you knew how to use a multimeter.
