What about a 3SGTE very nice motor inded- but might be hard to get on a budget :o

Personally I don't like 1st Gen MR2's tey are boxy and ugly- the 2nd Gen is by far the best (IN spite of it's pudginess)

Im guessing its the non-sc model...which is good from the handling point, but, its not nearly as fast in a straight line.
Still, awesome buy! (im thinking of getting an MR2 SC when I get out of Uni in, errr, 4 or 5 years )
As for mods, Im not to sure whats available for the non-SC version.....Perhaps even just getting the SC motor, and modding it, (145hp stock, get an SC14 blower from an MX6, some other mods, and, ur at 200hp, which is ALOT, as 145 took it to 60 in 6.7 seconds).

Either way, Im jealous

Took the words right out of my mouth...

3SGTE with big turbo running ~3BAR. The biggest problem you will encounter is intercooling. My tip is having a removable unit sitting horizontally on top of the engine compartment.

mmm those are sweet old skool cars! what color is it? if it's white, lower it and slap it on some RS Watanabe wheels. i saw one like that a while back, and it looked incredible. there's one for sale near me that says it has the J-Spec engine already in it, i might inquire about it sometime this week...
