Masking Tutorial?

Hi,

Does anyone know of a really decent masking tutorial for masking DIFFICULT areas using Tamiya tape or the like? I can't seem to find a really top notch tutorial for this.

Regards
Wolvy

Re: Masking Tutorial?

Well, Like masking the underside of a kit. Best masking techniques or how do other mask so perfectly compared to other people. I just don't understand how some ppl can get such perfect masking.

Re: Masking Tutorial?

I'm feeling the same here, lol...

Almost every my masking jobs are terrible... I think the problem is to cut the masking tape correctly... And of course, the masking tape it's very difficult to apply, if not nearly impossible, for example to the Tamiya's GT-R kit engine...

Re: Masking Tutorial?

Yh, thats what im saying. I can't understand why some people get masking so perfect on detailed parts like engines and underside of bodies. Yet mine really needs improving......maybe i should try liquid and see if that works for me.

Re: Masking Tutorial?

Silly Putty can be used to great effect too, and it's fast and easy.

Re: Masking Tutorial?

i just burnish the tape onto complex curves/edges and make sure i have a real sharp blade (preferably new) when cutting.

Re: Masking Tutorial?

Post some pictures of what you are masking and it will give people a little insight into what you are doing/the best way to advise you to do it etc..

Re: Masking Tutorial?

Silly putty doesn't leave many "greasy" when you retire it? I have the Micro Scale liquid masking, but never get nice results. I'll try again. Or maybe I'll have to try another brand?

Re: Masking Tutorial?

when using masking tape:

use a new blade
don't try to do it all using one single piece of tape - lots of small measured bits/strips are the key
you will sometimes need to touch up afterwards
have a little patience
plan you masking/painting according to the difficulty of the masking
eg. if you're painting a steering rack, don't try to mask the flex-joint; paint it all aluminium then mask off leaving the flex-joint to paint black

this applies to masking whether it is big or small.
