replace just the fuel pump in assembly?
How easy is it to replace just the fuel pump in the fuel pump assembly? I can buy just the pump $92. or the whole assembly for $204. I have replaced the assembly 2 time in ten years but now the auto parts store has both the assembly and just the pump. Any ideas of the time it takes to replace just the pump in the assembly? Thanks Dave

Re: replace just the fuel pump in assembly?
I've never done it-- I value my time too much..and don't like dropping the same tank twice in a year.
That $204 price is great if you are going to sell your truck, or intend on wrecking it. I can only assume it is an Airtex or some other afternarket unit. If you intend to keep it, I'd only use OEM pump assembly- the Delphi or A/C Delco units. The advantage to the new pump assembly is you don't have fuel sender unit issues, which are so common on the OEM units. When you replace the pump, you also replace the sending unit- a definite plus- it is no fun to replace a pump, then 6 months later have fuel guage issues. Bit the bullet and put in OEM equipment pumps, the sender units have been improved on the replacements, as well as the electrical connectors.

Re: replace just the fuel pump in assembly?
Thanks, I have not idea how long this 250,000 mile car will run. I dont mind rolling the dice. I was just wondering how much trouble is was to change out the pump in assy. Dave

Just buy an el cheapo off of eBay... it'll be around $80 and it'll last at least 50K

keep the fuel tank above 1/4 at all times to avoid burnout. with gas going above 5.oo / gallon you will be looking for another higher MPG vehicle to do most driving .. I use the truck for truck work and the car for small stuff.. |

Re: replace just the fuel pump in assembly?
Thanks to all!! I got a pump and sock only (Sunday night, only store open). I dropped the tank, pulled the pump assy and replace the pump. I had to bend down the bottom tin ring, pulled out the pump and pushed the new one in and bend up the bottom pump support tin ring back. Then put on the new sock. Thats the only way i could see to do it. There was no bolts to take apart the assy to remove just the pump. Worked fine. Thanks Dave

Re: replace just the fuel pump in assembly?
First time I did a fuel pump in my Suburban I pulled back the carpet and cut an access panel. I've cut the bed in my pick up trucks as well. The odd time there is an issue, or the next time a repair is needed it is sweet indeed. Helps if you can weld up the cut out piece with a lip for easy re-installment.
