2001: drive train noise while coasting, in gear

2001 Suburban, 140k miles.

I've noticed a strange noise while coasting with the vehicle in gear at lower speeds (under 30 mph). The best way to describe it is as "sh sh sh sh sh" at a tempo proportional to the speed of the vehicle. When I push the gas, the sound seems to go away (or it is masked by the engine sounds - I cannot tell). The sound persists when the brake is engaged, though.

I replaced the U joints about 30k miles ago and I checked/verified that the drive shaft had no play (the best that I could). I do notice a VERY slight clunk (clunk overstates it) when I press the accelerator. As already noted, the sound seems to go away when the accelerator is engaged.

I do not recall it happening in neutral, so I need to verify that.

Any help is appreciated.

the clunk noise when accelerating ......this may be those U joints.

these can be bad again..replacing them sometimes gets them damaged.. then you have the chinese U joints which many have had bad results..

If it is the U joints it won't take much longer before you will know for sure.


tires can make the sh noise.. this is when the tire belt gets broken . check tires for irregular wear.
