Exclamation The 15min $5.00 ISS "Clunk Repair"

I have a 2005 Impala with an Intermediate shaft Clunk....well it used to have one.

Takes 15 mins and a can of white lithium grease in a spray can with a nozzle and extension.

To get rid of the clunk WITHOUT pulling the ISS, take the black plastic cover over the brake pedal out of the dash. There are 2 plastic clips you depress and the panel drops down. Lay it on the floor below the brake pedal.

There is a rubber boot that comes out of the firewall/floor and goes up the shaft. Pull the boot away from the green cup and pull it down. Attach the spray extension tube to the can and spray the crap out of the knuckle.

You will not hurt the boot or the knuckle. You will see it looks like a small universal joint. You can start the car and turn the wheel from stop to stop and spray the joint down good.

Reattach the boot to the green cap and replace the plastic cover back into the snap holes.

Take the car for a ride. Make turns and let the lube work into the knuckle. In a few days you will notice it responds better and the noise.....well is gone.

My clunk was 98% gone within 20 mins of driving. I have re-sprayed the joint again just to make sure. Will update you on the clunk.

Better then the dealer making a $400.00 repair replacing the ISS.

I had this with my silverado when new. I sprayed some grease and wd40 into the steering shaft slip joint...that was 10yrs ago... so I guess GM saved a few bucks by not lubing all these !

Just don't give away your bottle of Lithium grease. It'll return at some point.
