Double WIP - Fujimi 430 Scuderia and Revell 458 Italia

Hi, all

Thought I'd share what I've been working on since yesterday. It's a double build because both will be painted the same colour (pearl white), both will have special decals and, well, I thought it'd be fun. I'm also putting myself on a rather strict deadline at least for one of the kits so if I have to choose I'll be focusing on the Scuderia more, mostly because I know the kit, it has fewer parts and it will be closer to box stock.

Anyway, here's what I started with

In addition to the kits in boxes you see a couple of sticker sets for both of them and a bag with parts from the Scuderia kit that I ordered from HLJ in order to have better brakes for the 458.

Let's start with what I've done with the 458 so far. First of all, I decided I wanted to cut out the plastic mesh near the tail lights.

Before:

After (the other side is also done now):

The main point is that I don't want to lose the mesh detail under layers of primer and paint and clear, and at the moment I'm thinking of reusing the removed plastic parts. It doesn't look too tidy at the moment but it's nothing that cannot be fixed with some filler.

I also added the panel line that should be there but isn't OOB

No panel line

Soon-to-be panel line

Panel line

In reality I think I'll just remove the area that is supposed to be a mesh and will actually put a mesh in there. But no need to rush things, eh?

I've also drilled out the turn signals, they will be, as they usually are with me, replaced with painted stretched clear sprue.

You can also see that I've glued in the door sills and the ducts in the front bumper (that's going to be a PITA to blend in...) and used the sprue from the kit to add some length to the front of the door sills - it seems that's necessary for every recent Ferrari kit from Fujimi.

I also could not help but play with the Scuderia wheels

Painted Model Master magnesium with their sealer...

... and detailed with chrome paint from a Tamiya marker and the fantastic Hobby Design emblem stickers. Also shod in some Pirellis

Can't wait to finish work tomorrow to get back to these.

Thanks for looking,
Alex

Very interesting project. I like your way of thinking of cutting out the mesh in order to avoid losing detail there from layers of paint. Even thou you might use real mesh later, I think thats a good tip.

Hey guys

Was hoping to post a lot more progress by now but it doesn't seem to be happening - lack of time, including weekends.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, and to answer some of them:

The deadline was yesterday - missed it, predictably. It's not a model show, unfortunately, but something silly yet important for me - yesterday was exactly 10 years since I'd joined Automotiveforums. I was hoping to mark it somehow but I'm true to form So I'll work on both models more or less equally now.

I think I might be forced to, we'll see.

Nope, Tang, I'd like to keep the decals to myself for now I can say that one is a little more serious than the other but that's all I'll divulge.

The MM magnesium works well for the wheels, doesn't it? On the other hand, I wish I had access to the stuff you can buy in your local shops.

Might as well post some progress - I've been spending as much time as I could on these but don't have much to show for it. Haven't done much to the Italia, on the 430 I used Tamiya gunmetal clearcoated with 2K clear to simulate CF. Since it's the shine and not the pattern that is visible on this car I prefer to do it this way.

Underside - the diffusor was painted X10, the rest is waiting for the SGB and detailing

Finished the door panels (Tamiya gunmetal, neutral grey and german grey). The mesh pocket is sort of dry-brushed with XF1 and it looks OK in person.

Finished the seats. Again, clearcoated X10, neutral grey. At first I thought to leave them grey but they looked too plain so I painted the middle parts of the cushion and the seatback flat black (well over an hour to mask, 20 seconds to paint, 2 minutes to remove the masking tape...)

The dashboard is also almost finished. The paint is german grey with the accents hand-painted with X10 and then detailed with SGB. PITA.

Some other "CF" pieces.

Mirrors - box stock except the sensor

Headlights - used the CM metal transfer for the LED strip (I seriously love how these turned out)

Front spoiler, rear window brace and shifter paddles

Thanks,
Alex

Re: Double WIP - Fujimi 430 Scuderia and Revell 458 Italia

Hey guys,

I finally got enough done to warrant an update - all of which involves the 430 Scuderia

First the large engine compartment. Drilled out most of the imitations of fasteners

And used top studio rivets to replace them

Finished - painted Tamiya gunmetal (clearcoated), Humbrol SGB, Tamiya Neutral Grey and finally Model Master magnesium metallizer + sealer.

Also finished the "engine" - didn't do anything to it except I used an AcuStion PE part for the top of the oil cap

Over to the interior. The steering column is done with the obligatory lock barrel/keyhole. The VIN number area is painted aluminium with a tiny "Ferrari" decal, the rest is gibberish done with a marker.

The interior tub was painted SGB, then masked off

Painted neutral grey, masked off again

Painted German grey

Masked off again ...

Painted Tamiya gunmetal and clearcoated. Then somewhat assembled and detailed, and here's the result.

Still need to add the mesh for the pockets, then it will be finished.

The last thing to show is the completed floorpan.

Hope you like it, and thanks again for looking.

Alex

Nice work on the interior. I'm doing the same on my 360 right now.

Re: Double WIP - Fujimi 430 Scuderia and Revell 458 Italia

Hey all! For various reasons (mostly unpleasant) I haven't been able to devote much attention to these kits for months, but I do think I might as well post a little update.

Let's start with the underside of the 458. This is what comes in the box. Fujimi one is much much better.

I thought of correcting it but it's just not the effort and I don't have good pictures of the underside anyway. I did add the panel line that separates the diffusor from the rest of the undertray.

Here's what it looks like now and I still haven't decided if I want to give the diffusor the same treatment as I did with the 430.

Finished valve covers, nothing fancy. The 458 ones are huge!

On to suspension. These are the brakes that come in the Revell 458 kit

You can see how much longer the Revell hubs and brakes are compared to the Fujimi 430 Scuderia kit parts that I'm going to use here

So I've decided to sacrifice accuracy for ease of building and cut off the pins

And I'm going to use the Revell hub/Fujimi hub/Fujimi brake disc sandwich. It works rather well on all four corners and will make ride height adjustment very easy.

Mocked up

The body. I was really unhappy with the shape and size of the headlight washers that Revell give us

So I filled them and made this little template out of thin plastic

Then used it like this on the body. Flipped it for use on the other side.

Here's the result.

And here's where I am with the bodies now - the final coat of primer needs a bit of sanding before paint. I've added the panel lines before the last coat of primer, and if you look closely at the body of the 458 you'll see that I've also filled the depressions used for the rear view mirrors and (not really visible) extended the panel lines under the doors to the front wheel openning.

Anyway, thanks for looking and I hope to post more sooner rather than later.
