brake issue
So not specifically a 91 F150 issue, but I have problems with the brakes. Specifically, the rear drivers side E-brake seems to be locked up. Enough that I can't get the drum off to fix it. Have attempted several things such as a torch to break the rust, drilled into the drum to anchor a bolt. Hammerred on the edge from behind to try and knock it off.... nothing is helping at all.
Anyone out there have an idea how to knock the drum off so I can find out what is up and hopefully fix the underlying issue? Thanks |

If you can get the drum to move, (not rusted to the hub) there might be a rust ridge inside the drum, or the drum is badly worn. Could be the park brake cable or linkage in the drum is seized or possibly the self adjuster star wheel is adjusted out too far. If the cable is seized, you'll need to cut it close to the backing plate, (gotta replace it anyway). If the cable isn't seized, you can try backing off the star wheel.

Hey thanks for the tips. Tried the star wheel, and apparently that doesnt help one bit. Drum barely wiggles at all - maybe a few hairsworth in either direction. Tried some PB blaster on the rusted areas after that, and seemed to help a little, but a few applications later, no further movement. E-brake cable doesnt seem to be seized, but thinking the internals are rusted badly enough to keep from allowing drum to come off.
Any additional tips/ideas? |

If the drum isn't loose from the bolts(look and you will see what I mean) take a heavy one handled hammer and hit in between the bolts. The drum may be rusted to the hub.

if you still haven't got it off you can look behind the backing plate and shear the little hold down pins shear them off and it'll come off you'll need to buy hardware kit anyway. you may need a flash lite or something to find the flat part of the pins on backing plate there are 2 of them and there round. maybe someone else can exsplain it better then i did?

Hey all - thanks for the help. Had given up after trying everything and put the wheel back on just to come in and see the stuff about shearing off the pins. Will try that possibly tomorrow, too friggin cold out to keep this up all night

Thanks for the gear puller idea. I have one of those from a prior job with...something... sucks how the mind is the first thing to go. Anyways, I'll try that tomorrow. Should (hopefully) do the trick!

Thanks again all. Appears to have worked with the gear puller. Still had to beat the hell out of the drums, but changed them anyways, so no big loss there.
