5.4L Triton V8 vs 5.3L Vortec V8

I've read a number of threads on other forums about comparisons in between the two...
Ofcourse these were on Ford and GM forums so the views were going to be sort of biased...
According to the figures on the sites, Ford's triton produces more torque... but remarks on one of Chevy's forums claimed a different result in real live applications.
Since the forums and comparisons were based in Ford and GM forums, their responses were a bit biased (understandable)...

Over here its neutral so I would like to see what the responses are.... here is the question:
In real world comparisons, which of these two engines would be the winner overall... (including the factors of maintenance frequency and fuel efficiency)

Re: 5.4L Triton V8 vs 5.3L Vortec V8

Is this for your van project?

I think you will find that they are both so similar it doesn't matter, and you would be best choose based on availability and ease to modify for your project.

Have you considered other options like a Toyota V8?

Yes it is for my van project...

I would have liked to go in for one of the pushrod engines in the Ford Racing Catalog but I thought since I'm going to use it in a van, why not get a current van engine... Surely they're designed for torque, which is what I need and would be easier to get since we have E-series and Savana vans here.
Both engines are equally available and would cost around the same....

About the Toyota V8.. a friend of mine is such a fan that he considered as a choice for replacing the engine in a Jag XJ..
I like the Toyota V8s and surely the one in the Tundra would be good alternative, but I'm more of a fan of the American V8s.
If the Toyota was an option, I would probably look more closely at the engine from the Nissan Titan...

Right now I'm reading on through various forums and through this one to see what kind of problems and issues people have had with the two in terms of maintenance.

Re: 5.4L Triton V8 vs 5.3L Vortec V8

I know someone who put a 4.0L Toyota V8 in big IVECO van, it goes bloody quickly, and has no issues with torque. He uses it as tow vehicle for his race car.

That said, a really big yank V8 would be cool.

Don't forget, anything you put in will need custom mounts, wiring, driveshaft etc.
You also need to consider exhaust setup etc.

So consider location of engine mounts, exhaust design, location of ancherlies etc.

I never known Toyota V8s to have loads of torque... not that they don't, its not one of its strong talking points... Reliability is...
I know that the American V8s are really torquey.. With the LS engines, you could trod along at 100mph with engine only turning over at 1500 rpm...

What do you know about the maintenance issues with the Vortec and Tritons??

Very little, we don't get either of them here, except in the odd and very rare converted import.

We do get a lot of Ford GM V8s out of Australia though, and both are very popular with very little difference between them.

Well the HSV Commodores use the American LS engines... and the Ford Falcon uses the Ford Modular engines (same used in the Mustang and F150 trucks)...
So you they're the same engines...

Re: 5.4L Triton V8 vs 5.3L Vortec V8

Not totally, the Commodores use an Ausie version of the Chev small block.
Its tuned and built in Australia from castings produced in the US.
The Falcon only very recently switched to the modular V8, and has not sold in very high numbers in V8 form, so they are still very rare here, and someway untried.

The favorites are still the old 350 and 351

Re: 5.4L Triton V8 vs 5.3L Vortec V8

I don't have any experience with the Vortec motor, but I had a 99 F150 with the 5.4 Triton V8. That motor was great and had a ton of torque. I was able to move a 40 Yard dumpster sideways and into position in my driveway. The dumpster was half full of shingles and roofing waste and the truck moved it with ease. I was getting about 14 MPG, it was my daily driver for 3 years and I didn't have to do anything other then regular oil changes on the motor for maintenance.

Now this is the kind of response I'm waiting for.
Did you feel it had more torque at low rpms or higher up the rev range???

Does anyone have a similar testimonial for the 5.3 Vortec???

Well its tough to say. I had 35" tires and at low rpms I felt like it could pull anything, also had a pretty big foot print with those tires.

Even with the large tires, the truck had plenty of highway passing power to get me by whatever. Not to mention I could still break the rear tires loose from a stand still.

Damn, now your making me wish I didn't trade it in.

@ Hiflow 5 0 - You're probably the best person to comment on this... You had a Ford 5.4L Triton and now you're going to get a GM truck. Whatever you get, it will definitely have a Vortec in it, so if you can, give me an update on how it is and if it is better than the Ford.

Variable Displacement Engine

We all know that Chrysler's Hemi and GM's L99 engine have variable displacement technologies that allows cylinders to be shut down on light loads, etc.... They call is Multi-Displacement System and Active Fuel Management....

I heard of something from Ford called VDE in the following article....
http://media.ford.com/article_displa...rticle_id=6445
The article seems to be made in 2001 and I was wondering if it was already in place in the Triton engines.

I have no idea... However you might notice that the thread is about car engines rather than dishwashers....
