97 sunfire 2.2L power loss and stall
hey guys. i post regularly on the blazer forum, but just picked up a 97 sunfire 2.2L auto trans for my sister.
I was driving it home to do some basic maintenance to it, and after about 40 miles it gave me some problems. I came around a corner, onto a highway on-ramp, and when i tried to accelerate, it bogged down. almost felt like a coil pack went out, but it didn't throw a "check engine" light and i didn't hear any knocking. pulled to the shoulder and it stalled when i came to a stop. waited about 3 minutes, and it fired right up and made it the rest of the way home. Before I bought the car, the cam and crank position sensors were replaced. From what i understand, this happened before, and those were the codes that popped up. I changed plugs, wires, and the oil yesterday. thanks.

Re: 97 sunfire 2.2L power loss and stall
seems like the timing chain is going slack at acceleration.
i got codes for cam and crank sensors, which were replaced 100 miles ago. you can hear the chain smacking around on acceleration replacing the chain and gears tomorrow while i'm in there i'm doing the water pump and oil pump. ill post the results tomorrow.

Re: 97 sunfire 2.2L power loss and stall
Also do a back pressure test on your catalytic converter, a plugged cat could choke your engine out.

Re: 97 sunfire 2.2L power loss and stall
the exhaust is good. it's not "choking out"
its def a loss of timing. the old chain def had too much slack in it, and the tensioner was frozen, so this should fix it. should have it all back together tomorrow...
