Fuel Pump or something else?

Just had a new fuel pump put on 2005 buick century... the problem was that it was hard to get the car to start..one day it just didnt even turn over...got a new fuel pump.... NOW--- after getting the car back from the mechanic it is still very difficult to start it..i have to press the gas when i turn the key in order to get it to start.... but if i turn the engine off and then leave it for like 2 minutes it will start right up with no problem...if i leave the car sit for an hour it will have trouble starting... did they get something in the gas when they were repairing the fuel pump..whats happening???? help

Re: Fuel Pump or something else?

Welcome to AF!!

First of all did you change the fuel filter when you changed the fuel pump? Second, on the fuel rail there is a fitting to check the fuel pressure. Rent a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure. Your problem sounds like you have a leaking fuel pressure regulator that is causing your problem. When you let it sit for a period of time the fuel pressure is dropping too low and it takes time for the pressure to build up to a point where the injectors have enough fuel pressure to work. The pressure should be at least 45 psi with the engine off. With the pump running you should get at least 60 psi. If you don't get these figures at a minimum change the fuel pressure regulator and you should see a significant difference.

Re: Fuel Pump or something else?

Symptoms of a cold hard start is usually a bad, or dirty Massive Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

Re: Fuel Pump or something else?

There's a test for the fuel pressure, and the electric fuel pump.

Re: Fuel Pump or something else?

i got a new fuel pump... so the fact that the car is hard to start..but after i get it started it runs fine.... so i am either looking at a bad fuel regulator or a map flow sensor? how much should i expect to pay at a repair shop for either of these?
