Transmission problem???

My olds 88 will go no faster than 20 or so miles per hour. Any idea what might be the problems with transmission?

Re: Transmission problem???

What year of car? Also, much more info is needed on symptoms here.

It depends on engine revs and performance. If acceleration is strong, but the engine seems to be winding-out, then perhaps the transmission is not shifting out of first gear.

If the engine revs like crazy but acceleration is very slow, the transmission may be slipping.
If the engine does not rev much, and acceleration is very slow, then the engine may be down on power. There are many reasons for this particular problem.
