How to press out balljoint using press kit
Hey guys,
I need to change my lower ball joints and am using a powerbuilt balljoint press kit. I successfully pressed out the lower balljoint, although I broke it in the process. I installed the new ball joint but couldn't get it to seat properly. Its still hanging out at an approximate 30 degree angle (although it is pressed in very tightly and I've been driving it like that. I want to remove this new balljoint and reseat it but was having trouble doing so and didn't want to break it. IS it ok to press out the balljoint using a receiver cup and by applying pressure to the threaded stud? This is how I broke the old balljoint, although I was using a receiver cup that was too small and ended up pressing out the backplate on the joint. I'm hoping that using a large enough cup will allow me to safely press out the joint? I'd rather somehow only place pressure on the seat but there doesn't seem to be enough space inside the clamp to use receiver cup and a cup that goes over the threads to only press the seat. Sorry for the verbose post! Thanks, Alex |

Re: How to press out balljoint using press kit
try tapping/driving the BJ out with a brass punch on the high side so its
straight then, repress so it goes in even.you might want to remove the BJ & sand/clean the control arm then grease for easier installation. BTW i always hammer old BJ out with support under control arm.

Re: How to press out balljoint using press kit
get the correct sized cup . cup should be down, when cranking the stud down do not go into the control arm . stop then wack the ball joint out. you may have damaged the control arm . get a file and fix any metal damage to the hole in the control arm.
get another ball joint. |
