2000 GT Overfilled with Oil

Working on a 2000 Eclipse GT. It stopped while being driving. Would not start. Battery was low (from trying to get started prior to my arrival). Recharge battery still was unable to get started, so checking the obvious while periodically trying to start. Finally was able to start (blow out some white smoke from exhast initially and while driving started to sound muffled). Was only able to get 2 miles before it stop on me. Let it sat for few minutes and checked the oil (note, I tried to check earlier before driving but car was not level). The dipstick reading: overfilled with oil. Removed the excess oil from car and still unable to start. Waited a day, able to start and move it. It smoked a little at the start of the 23 mile trip.

My tentative plans are the obvious (try to fix leaks, change oil, replace spark plugs and wires) but want input (comments and/or suggestions) from others.

1) Did you over fill crankcase with oil?
2) What did the oil look like after draining the extra?
3) How is the coolant level?

If the coolant + crankcase oil are good , replace the bad battery.
Todays Auto will not run proper with a bad battery.

1) No, I did not over fill.
2) The oil appeared to be fine except need to be changed (e.g. dark and oily).
3) Cannot see the coolant at opening (may need to drain and check).

Battery, I believe is fine (New replaced several months ago).

Symptoms of a dirty, or a bad MAF sensor is a cold hard start.

If not sure about Battery, have it charged and load tested at a local Auto parts store.

1) Try a new air filter, and clean MAF/IACT sensors with CRC MAF sensor cleaner.
2) Put a new upstream HO2 sensor only, and keep the other for a spare down stream.
3) Put a new fuel filler, and have a back pressure test done on your catalytic converters to complete your tune up.

Fill 50/50 coolant when cold to the full level on coolant reservoir tank.
Monitor coolant level!

I've seen this happen many times at the Mitsu dealer I work at; clean the throttle body with carb cleaner and see what happens. A lot of times, when the battery is disconnected for any length of time, it wipes the PCM's memory. If you have carbon build up on the throttle plate, the PCM compensates that by increasing the base idle. Some cases, if it's really bad, it won't start up like what you have.

I appreciate the responses.

Removed the excess oil from the lower intake. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, valve cover gasket and spark plug seals. Changed oil and filter, just found old oil only. Top off the coolant, it was low.

So far no oil leaks.

Just parked, it runs fine until it warms up and it starts smoking (approximately 20 minutes...note the current temperature above 100 degrees lately).


It seemed to take a little longer each time to start smoking. So, I took it for a drive once to see if would clear up. It started smoking on acceleration. And once warmed up, it struggle to idle at a stop (in drive or park). Afterward, I checked the intake, it was still somewhat clean.

Again tried letting it run just parked, runs fine until it warms up (approximately 20 minutes) or runs at 2000 rpm when white smoke comes from the exhaust. Engine seems to be running fine just a lot of white smoke.

The level of the oil and coolant appears to be unchanged. Checked after each instance (I let it set for awhile before checking).

I am open to any suggestions.

Sorry tried to post several times but timeout on me.

I appreciate the suggestion.

Was told it sound like the valve stem seals and to drive the car to see if it will reseal. So I drove it 20 miles. Initially it smoked but as I continued it clear up. It sound good and drove fine. But it stalled when I returned to the driveway. I had to give it gas, keeping the rpms at 600-900 to stop it from stalling. On one attempt, it made the low on oil sound. So I added 1/4- 1/3 quart of oil. Sounded better, easier to keep running, so pulled in garage and allowed to idle by itself for a few minutes. Later found it was missing 1/4 - 1/2 quart of oil (prior to the drive, the oil level was almost between the two notches on the dipstick...on the low side sligthly). Coolant fine.

Interesting, to keep from stalling on a driveway with maybe 20-30 degree incline, it needed 1/4-1/3 quart of oil.

Next day, ran it in the garage for 30 minutes. After 15 minutes (not smoking), I pump the gas moderately several times. It smoked noticeably on the first try but none on the latter ones. Perform this several more time, no smoking. On the last few minutes, I moderately pump the gas and it started smoking. It also, kept smoking during the final idling but not as bad as the final pump. Found it was slightly low on oil. Again coolant was fine.

Still thinking about performing the compression test and leakdown test. This requires removing the intake to access the rear plugs, correct?

Curreintly, trying to determine my options. I was told a valve job needed or engine replaced. How much is a valve job? Is it a DIY?

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Not sure how hard it is on the v6, but yeah I think you wold have to remove the intake plenum.
Do that and post up the numbers.
