96 Z71 extended cab engine removal with manual trans question

I am in the process of replacing my blown motor in my z71. I have replaced motors in cars with auto transmissions, but never a manual. When I removed the starter I relized that there were no flywheel bolts. Then I began research and cannot find a good answer. I have the 4.3 and have quite a bit of room in front of the motor wifh the radiator removed.

My question is this: do I need to drop the driveshaft, lower the tranmission and transfer case and front drive axle, or do I have enough room to pull the motor forward and remove it without damaging the clutch?

Please help, I have the truck torn apart, and motor ready to remove.....diagrams or info would be greatly appreciated!!

Removing front drive shaft may give more room to get to stuff.
You need to support transmission in the up position.

After removing starter remove oil filter and thge dust cover on lower front transmission bell housing.
If oil cooler linen to rear of engine you will have to disconnect them. Make sure you have all 6 transmission to engine mounting bolts out.
Alot of the have line and bracket holding nuts on then you have to remove before removing bolts.

You will need to suport/chain/jack/block the transmission up to keep it from dropping down.
And keep it suported up for engine install.The clutch and pressure plate will come out on engine.

Good time to replace the clutch stuff when changing engine.


Remember to align clutch plate with a clutch alignment tool befor installing engine and when you go together go straight back to transmission.
When going together I use engine aligment pins on back of engine to help align and rotate engine or the transmission front shaft to center into clutch plate.

Do not force it back together.
A little push and wiggle and engine rotate little should get it back together.
Force it and you may damage stuff.
Let us know how it goes.

Do you know how to set the distributer on that year?
Are you using a cheery picker type hoist or roll type or straight engine hoist?

did that last jan in my truck. (1990 350 k1500 5 speed). after disconnecting EVERYTHING, put just a lil bit pressure, enough to stiffen the lifting chains, and slid the motor away from the trans by the time i was off the motor mounts, they were completely seperated. (motor ---___ Motor mount) it took me a month, but i put $5000 in mine... this winter im replacing all the things i didnt then... sensors, ign, yeah... hope everything goes well.


P.S. when seperating, MAKE SURE there is enough pressure on the life to bear the weight. not just take the slak out...

When seperating the engine from transmission the poster's question was he wanted to know how to do it without clutch damage.

The proper way to do it is to support the transmission when seperating.
Or you run the rish of clutch plate damage.

Also support the transmission when installing engine.
or you may have a clutch that does not work well.
